Abstract

A joint balancing insert with an actuated mechanism is for balancing a joint during a joint surgery is disclosed. The joint balancing insert includes a first plate, a second plate and an actuator there between. The second plate includes an integrated mounting portion for mounting a cutting block used to guide surgical cuts of the joint during the joint surgery. Various configurations of the integrated mounting portion may be implemented in the insert to provide for mounting various types of cutting blocks, such as cutting blocks for tibial cuts, femoral cuts, and distal femoral cuts.

Claims (41)

1. An insert for balancing a joint during repair of the joint, the insert comprising:

a first plate configured to interface with a bone structure of a joint;

a second plate elastically coupled with the first plate and including

a plate portion spaced apart from the first plate and configured to interface with an opposing bone structure of the joint,

a transition portion extending from the plate portion protruding beyond the perimeter of the first plate, and

a mounting portion extending from the transition portion in a transverse direction relative to the plate portion in the direction of the first plate;

a mounting guide, the mounting guide includes a bore that extends through the mounting portion; and

an actuator located between the first plate and the plate portion and configured to apply a force to the first plate and to the plate portion.

2. The insert of claim 1 , further comprising a plurality of sensors for determining a spatial relationship between the first plate and the plate portion.

3. The insert of claim 1 , wherein the first plate is a top plate configured to contact a femur during repair of the joint, and the second plate is a bottom plate where the plate portion is configured to contact a tibia during repair of the joint and the mounting portion extends up beyond the top plate.

4. The insert of claim 1 , wherein the actuator is a pneumatic actuator including a bellows made of an inflatable material, the bellows configured to inflate and pneumatically apply the force to the first plate and to the plate portion.

5. The insert of claim 1 , wherein the mounting guide includes a flange protruding from the mounting portion.

6. An insert for balancing a joint during repair of the joint, the insert comprising:

a top plate configured to interface with a bone structure of a joint;

a bottom plate including

a bottom portion spaced apart from the top plate and configured to interface with an opposing bone structure of the joint,

a bottom transition portion extending from the bottom portion in the general direction of the bottom portion, and

a bottom mounting portion extending from the bottom transition portion towards and beyond the top plate;

a mounting guide, the mounting guide includes a bore that extends through the bottom mounting portion; and

a pneumatic actuator located between the top plate and the bottom portion, the pneumatic actuator including bellows made of an inflatable material, the bellows configured to inflate and pneumatically apply a force to the top plate and to the bottom portion.

7. The insert of claim 6 , further comprising a plurality of sensors for determining a spatial relationship between the top plate and the bottom portion.

8. The insert of claim 6 , wherein the mounting guide includes a flange protruding from the bottom mounting portion, the insert further comprising an adjustment device affixed to the bottom mounting portion for adjusting a placement of a guide pin.

9. A joint balancing system for balancing the joint during repair of the joint including the insert of claim 6 , the joint balancing system further comprising:

a first bone angle sensor for affixing to the tibia during repair of the joint;

a second bone angle sensor for affixing to the femur during repair of the joint; and

an insert angle sensor coupled to the insert.

10. An insert for balancing a joint during repair of the joint, the insert comprising:

a top plate configured to interface with a bone structure of a joint;

a bottom plate including

a bottom portion spaced apart from the top plate and configured to interface with an opposing bone structure of the joint,

a bottom transition portion extending from the bottom portion in the general direction of the bottom portion, and

a bottom mounting portion extending from the bottom transition portion towards and beyond the top plate;

a mounting guide, the mounting guide includes a bore that extends through the bottom mounting portion;

an actuator located between the top plate and the bottom portion for distributing a force to the top plate and to the bottom portion; and

wherein the bottom transition portion includes a first transition leg extending from the bottom portion and a second transition leg extending from the bottom portion; and

wherein the bottom mounting portion further comprises:

a first leg extending upward from the first transition leg,

a second leg extending upward from second transition leg and joined to the first leg at the distal end of the bottom mounting portion,

a first mounting portion protruding from the first leg, and

a second mounting portion protruding from the second leg.

11. The insert of claim 8 , wherein the first leg extends further than the second leg.
