Abstract

A gaming system comprising a regulated gaming machine primarily dedicated to playing at least one casino wagering game. The gaming machine includes an electronic display device and one or more electronic input devices and game-logic circuitry configured to detect, via at least one of the one or more electronic input devices, a physical item associated with a monetary value that establishes a credit balance. The game-logic circuitry is further configured to initiate the casino wagering game in response to an input indicative of a wager covered by the credit balance. The game-logic circuitry is further configured to increment a progressive jackpot associated with the wagering game. The game-logic circuitry is further configured to conduct a skill-based bonus game that awards portions of the incremented progressive jackpot based on skillful inputs of a player in response to a triggering event occurring during the wagering game. The game-logic circuitry is further configured to receive, via at least one of the one or more electronic input devices, a cashout input that initiates a payout from the credit balance.

Claims (35)

1. A gaming system, comprising:

a regulated gaming machine primarily dedicated to playing at least one casino wagering game, the regulated gaming machine including an electronic display device and one or more electronic input devices; and

game-logic circuitry configured to:

detect, via at least one of the one or more electronic input devices, a physical item associated with a monetary value that establishes a credit balance;

initiate the casino wagering game in response to an input indicative of a wager covered by the credit balance;

increment a progressive jackpot associated with the wagering game, wherein incrementing the progressive jackpot comprises incrementing at least one of a plurality of awards associated with respective ones of a plurality of discrete elements to be later displayed in a skill-based bonus game, each of the plurality of awards comprising less than a full portion of the incremented progressive jackpot;

in response to a triggering event occurring during the wagering game, conduct a skill-based bonus game that awards portions of the incremented progressive jackpot based on skillful inputs of a player via use of at least one of the one or more electronic input devices, wherein the game-logic circuitry is configured to conduct the skill-based bonus game using a processor that

electronically interprets one or more electronic data signals indicative of the skillful inputs of the player,

automatically changes a visual representation of one or more of the plurality of discrete elements via the electronic display device in response to the skillful inputs of the player being electronically interpreted,

generates a random number value using a seeding process that cycles at a speed of a minimum of one hundred calls per second, and

automatically applies each increment of the progressive jackpot to the each of the respective ones of the plurality of discrete elements based on the random number value; and

receive, via at least one of the one or more electronic input devices, a cashout input that initiates a payout from the credit balance.

2. The gaming system of claim 1 , further including a random element generator configured to generate one or more random elements, an outcome of the wagering game being randomly selected based, at least in part, on the one or more random elements.

3. The gaming system of claim 1 , wherein the portion of the incremented progressive jackpot is awarded by expending an opportunity that is earned during play of the wagering game.

4. The gaming system of claim 3 , wherein the skill-based bonus game is provided in the form of a shooter-style video game.

5. The gaming system of claim 4 , wherein the opportunity is a shot that may be expended during play of the shooter-style video game.

6. The gaming system of claim 1 , wherein each increment of the progressive jackpot is randomly applied to one of the discrete elements by a processor that executes a random number generator with a seeding process that relies upon an unpredictable factor and cycles continuously during play of the wagering game.

7. The gaming system of claim 1 , wherein the progressive jackpot includes a reset value, and wherein a portion of the reset value is distributed among the discrete elements in a predefined manner.

8. The gaming system of claim 1 , wherein the game-logic circuitry is further configured to provide an option for the player to select a luck-based bonus game as an alternative to playing the skill-based bonus game, wherein the luck-based bonus game allows a portion of a reset value, but not the incremented value, of the progressive jackpot to be won.

9. A method of operating a gaming system, the gaming system including game-logic circuitry and a regulated gaming machine, the gaming machine primarily dedicated to playing at least one casino wagering game, the gaming machine including an electronic display device and one or more electronic input devices, the method comprising:

detecting, via at least one of the one or more electronic input devices, a physical item associated with a monetary value that establishes a credit balance;

initiating the casino wagering game in response to an input indicative of a wager covered by the credit balance;

incrementing a progressive jackpot associated with the wagering game, wherein incrementing the progressive jackpot comprises incrementing at least one of a plurality of awards associated with respective ones of a plurality of discrete elements to be later displayed in a skill-based bonus game, each of the plurality of awards comprising less than a full portion of the incremented progressive jackpot;

in response to a triggering event occurring during the wagering game, conducting a skill-based bonus game that awards portions of the incremented progressive jackpot based on skillful inputs of a player via use of at least one of the one or more electronic input devices, wherein said conducting the skill-based bonus game comprises using a processor that

electronically interprets one or more electronic data signals indicative of the skillful inputs of the player,

generates a random number value using a seeding process that relies upon an unpredictable factor and cycles continuously during play of the wagering game at a speed of a minimum of one hundred calls per second,

automatically applies the incrementing of the progressive jackpot to one of the respective ones of the plurality of discrete elements based on the random number value, and

automatically changes a visual representation of one or more of the plurality of discrete elements via the electronic display device in response to the skillful inputs of the player being electronically interpreted; and

receiving, via at least one of the one or more electronic input devices, a cashout input that initiates a payout from the credit balance.

10. The method of claim 9 , further including generating one or more random elements, an outcome of the wagering game being randomly selected based, at least in part, on the one or more random elements.

11. The method of claim 9 , wherein the portion of the incremented progressive jackpot is awarded by expending an opportunity that is earned during play of the wagering game.

12. The method of claim 11 , wherein the skill-based bonus game is provided in the form of a shooter-style video game.

13. The method of claim 12 , wherein the opportunity is a shot that may be expended during play of the shooter-style video game.

14. The method of claim 9 , wherein the progressive jackpot includes a reset value, and wherein a portion of the reset value is distributed among the discrete elements in a predefined manner.

15. The method of claim 9 , wherein the game-logic circuitry is further configured to provide an option for the player to select a luck-based bonus game as an alternative to playing the skill-based game, wherein the luck-based bonus game allows a portion of a reset value, but not the incremented value, of the progressive jackpot to be won.
