Abstract

Disclosed herein are methods, systems, and processes that can include performing a replication operation, receiving a backup operation instruction at a replication agent, and, in response to receipt of the backup operation instruction, performing an application quiescing operation and invoking an action of a backup agent. The replication operation sends data of an application executed by a virtual machine at a primary site, to a secondary site. The virtual machine is executed by a computing system at the primary site. The backup operation instruction is received from the backup agent. The application quiescing operation is performed by the replication agent. The application quiescing operation quiesces the replication operation, at least in part, by quiescing the application.

2. The computer-implemented method of claim 1 , further comprising:

sending one or more queries to a backup proxy at the secondary site, wherein

the one or more queries comprise

a request for metadata associated with the replicated data.

3. The computer-implemented method of claim 2 , wherein the one or more queries comprise a request for backup method information, and the method further comprises:

the backup method information, at least in part, indicates a backup method to be used in backing up the replicated data.

4. The computer-implemented method of claim 2 , further comprising:

receiving the metadata, in response to the one or more queries, and

storing the metadata at the primary site by, at least in part, storing at least a portion of the metadata in a virtual disk of the virtual machine.

5. The computer-implemented method of claim 4 , further comprising:

subsequent to the receiving the metadata, replicating the metadata and the replicated data to the secondary site.

6. The computer-implemented method of claim 4 , wherein

the metadata comprises information configured to facilitate granular restore of the virtual machine.

7. The computer-implemented method of claim 4 , wherein

the storing comprises

storing a location of the metadata, and

storing a location of the replicated data.

8. The computer-implemented method of claim 7 , wherein

the location of the replicated data and the location of the metadata are configured to be used by the backup server to restore the application from a backup image of the application stored at the secondary site.

9. The computer-implemented method of claim 4 , further comprising:

as a result of the backup operation instruction, performing a backup operation at the secondary site, wherein

the backup operation is performed by a backup proxy at the secondary site,

the replication operation results, at least in part, in creation of a replica,

the replica comprises

the replicated data, and

metadata associated with the application, and

the performing the backup operation comprises

generating a backup image from the replica using the metadata.

10. The computer-implemented method of claim 9 , wherein

performing the backup operation further comprises:

generating a snapshot of the replica at a reference point in time;

generating the backup image in a backup format;

mounting the snapshot;

retrieving granular metadata for the application from the metadata in the replica; and

sending the granular metadata to the backup server.

11. The computer-implemented method of claim 1 , wherein

the action of the backup agent is invoked after the application has been quiesced.

12. The computer-implemented method of claim 1 , wherein

the replication agent and the backup agent are executed by the virtual machine.

13. A non-transitory computer-readable storage medium, comprising program instructions, which, when executed by one or more processors of a computing system, perform a method comprising:

performing a replication operation, wherein

the replication operation sends replicated data from a primary site to a secondary site,

the replicated data is a copy of data written by an application that is executed by a virtual machine, and

the virtual machine is executed by a computing system at the primary site;

receiving a backup operation instruction at a replication agent at the primary site, wherein

the backup operation instruction is received from a backup agent managed by a backup server at the primary site; and

in response to receipt of the backup operation instruction,

performing an application quiescing operation, wherein

the application quiescing operation is performed by the replication agent, and

the application quiescing operation quiesces the replication operation, at least in part, by quiescing the application, and

invoking an action of the backup agent, wherein

the action facilitates production of a backup image from the replicated data by a backup operation performed at the secondary site by a backup proxy.

14. The non-transitory computer-readable storage medium of claim 13 , wherein the method further comprises:

sending one or more queries to a backup proxy at the secondary site, wherein the one or more queries comprise a request for metadata associated with the replicated data.

15. The non-transitory computer-readable storage medium of claim 14 , wherein the one or more queries comprise a request for backup method information, and the method further comprises:

receiving the backup method information, wherein

the backup method information, at least in part, indicates a backup method to be used in backing up the replicated data.
