Abstract

The invention relates to a porous osteoinductive calcium phosphate material having an average grain size in a range of 0.1-1.50 μm, having a porosity consisting essentially only of micropores in a size range of 0.1-1.50 μm, and having a surface area percentage of micropores in a range of 10-40%.

Claims (29)

1. A porous calcium phosphate material for osteoinduction, the porous calcium phosphate material comprising:

a plurality of grains arranged in a continuous matrix, each grain in the plurality of grains having a grain size in a range of 0.1-1.5 μm; and

a plurality of micropores configured to provide spaces between grains in the plurality of grains, each micropore having a size in a range of 0.1-1.5 μm, wherein the porous calcium phosphate material is free of macropores having a size in a range of 0.1 to 1.5 mm,

wherein a surface area percentage of the micropores is in a range from 10% to 40% over a surface of the calcium phosphate material,

wherein the porous calcium phosphate material is configured to be resorbed at least partly after implantation, and to produce autologous bone at both an osseous site and a non-osseous site of living tissues, and

wherein the porous calcium phosphate material has a protein adsorption capacity of at least 40%, wherein the protein adsorption capacity is expressed as a percentage of protein absorbed by a volume of 1 ml of the porous calcium phosphate material from a volume of 3 ml of a 1% aqueous solution of fetal bovine serum solution in the presence of 25 ppm sodium azide (NaN3) after 24 hours.

2. The porous calcium phosphate material of claim 1 , further configured to be injected without a fluidic carrier.

3. The porous calcium phosphate material of claim 1 , further configured to be resorbed completely after implantation.

4. The porous calcium phosphate material of claim 1 , wherein the non-osseous site comprises muscle.

5. The porous calcium phosphate material of claim 1 , wherein the plurality of grains comprise octacalcium phosphate, apatites, whitlockites, or combinations thereof.

6. The porous calcium phosphate material of claim 1 , wherein the plurality of grains comprise resorbable biphasic calcium phosphate (BCP) and resorbable tricalcium phosphate.

7. The porous calcium phosphate material of claim 1 , wherein the plurality of grains comprise β-tricalcium phosphate.

8. The porous calcium phosphate material of claim 1 , wherein the surface area percentage of the micropores is in a range from 10% to 25% over the surface of the calcium phosphate material.

9. The porous calcium phosphate material of claim 1 , wherein the surface area percentage of the micropores comprises a percentage of a first surface area associated with the plurality of micropores and a second surface area associated with both the plurality of micropores and the plurality of grains in a sectional view of the porous calcium phosphate material.

10. The porous calcium phosphate material of claim 1 , wherein the plurality of grains are interconnected.

11. The porous calcium phosphate material of claim 1 , further configured to be applied as a coating to a different material.

12. A calcium phosphate material comprising:

a plurality of grains arranged in a continuous matrix;

a plurality of micropores configured to provide spaces between grains in the plurality of grains, each micropore in the plurality of micropores having a size in a range of 0.1-1.5 pm,

wherein a surface area percentage of the micropores is in a range from 10% to 40% over a surface of the calcium phosphate material; and

a protein adsorption capacity of at least 40%, the protein adsorption capacity expressed as a percentage of protein absorbed by a volume of 1 ml of the calcium phosphate material from a volume of 3 ml of a 1% aqueous solution of fetal bovine serum solution in the presence of 25 ppm sodium azide (NaN 3 ) after 24 hours.

13. The calcium phosphate material of claim 12 , further configured to be resorbed at least partly after implantation.

14. The calcium phosphate material of claim 12 , further configured to be resorbed completely after implantation.

15. The calcium phosphate material of claim 14 , further configured to produce autologous bone at both an osseous site and a non-osseous site of living tissues.

16. The calcium phosphate material of claim 15 , wherein the non-osseous site comprises muscle.

17. The calcium phosphate material of claim 12 , wherein the calcium phosphate material is in the form of microparticles having a particle size ranging from about 50 pm to about 1500 pm.

18. The calcium phosphate material of claim 12 , wherein the plurality of grains comprise octacalcium phosphate, apatites, whitlockites, resorbable biphasic calcium phosphate (BCP), resorbable tricalcium phosphate, β-tricalcium phosphate, or combinations thereof.

19. The calcium phosphate material of claim 12 , further configured to be applied as a coating to a different material.

20. The calcium phosphate material of claim 12 , wherein each grain in the plurality of grains has a grain size less than 1.5 μm.
