Abstract

One embodiment is directed to a communication system comprising a remote unit comprising a remote unit local clock and a controller communicatively coupled to the remote unit using a switched Ethernet network. The remote unit is configured to synchronize the remote unit local clock to a reference timing source using timing messages communicated over the switched Ethernet network with the remote unit. The communication system is configured to transmit the timing messages and baseband data so as to reduce a level of contention encountered by the timing messages in connection with being communicated over the switched Ethernet network.

Claims (29)

1. A communication system comprising:

a remote unit comprising a remote unit local clock, the remote unit configured to wirelessly communicate radio frequency (RF) signals with user equipment, at least some of the RF signals comprising information destined for, or originating from, the user equipment; and

a controller communicatively coupled to the remote unit using a switched Ethernet network, the controller configured to perform at least some baseband processing associated with wirelessly communicating with the user equipment;

wherein the remote unit and the controller are configured to communicate, over the switched Ethernet network, baseband data associated with wirelessly communicating with the user equipment;

wherein the remote unit is configured to synchronize the remote unit local clock to a reference timing source using timing messages communicated over the switched Ethernet network with the remote unit; and

wherein the communication system is configured to transmit the timing messages and the baseband data so as to reduce a level of contention encountered by the timing messages in connection with being communicated over the switched Ethernet network.

2. The system of claim 1 , comprising a plurality of remote units communicatively coupled to the controller using the switched Ethernet network, wherein each of the plurality of remote units comprises a respective remote unit local clock, wherein the plurality of remote units are configured to wirelessly communicate RF signals with the user equipment.

3. The system of claim 2 , wherein the plurality of remote units and the controller are configured to communicate, over the switched Ethernet network, the baseband data.

4. The system of claim 3 , wherein each of the plurality of remote units is configured to synchronize the respective remote unit local clock to the reference timing source using respective timing messages communicated over the switched Ethernet network with the respective remote unit.

5. The system of claim 2 , wherein the controller and the plurality of remote units are configured to serve a same cell.

6. The system of claim 2 , wherein each of the plurality of remote units is configured to perform at least some baseband processing associated with wirelessly communicating with the user equipment.

7. The system of claim 6 , wherein the plurality of remote units are configured to perform inverse Fast Fourier Transform (iFFT) processing associated with wirelessly communicating with the user equipment in a downlink direction and are configured to perform Fast Fourier Transform (FFT) processing associated with wirelessly communicating with the user equipment in an uplink direction.

8. The system of claim 1 , wherein the controller includes or is in communication with the reference timing source.

9. The system of claim 8 , wherein the remote unit is configured to communicate the timing messages over the switched Ethernet network with the controller.

10. The system of claim 1 , wherein the timing messages comprise IEEE 1588 timing messages.

11. A method of wirelessly communicating with user equipment using a communication system, the communication system comprising a remote unit including a remote unit local clock, the remote unit configured to wirelessly communicate radio frequency (RF) signals with user equipment, at least some of the RF signals comprising information destined for, or originating from, the user equipment, the communication system further comprising a controller communicatively coupled to the remote unit using a switched Ethernet network, the controller configured to perform at least some baseband processing associated with wirelessly communicating with the user equipment, the method comprising:

communicating, over the switched Ethernet network between the remote unit and the controller, baseband data associated with wirelessly communicating with the user equipment;

communicating timing messages over the switched Ethernet network with the remote unit; and

synchronizing the remote unit local clock to a reference timing source using the timing messages;

wherein the timing messages and the baseband data are transmitted so as to reduce a level of contention encountered by the timing messages in connection with being communicated over the switched Ethernet network.

12. The method of claim 11 , the communication system comprising a plurality of remote units communicatively coupled to the controller using the switched Ethernet network, wherein each of the plurality of remote units comprises a respective remote unit local clock, wherein the remote units are configured to wirelessly communicate RF signals with the user equipment.

13. The method of claim 12 , wherein the plurality of remote units and the controller are configured to communicate, over the switched Ethernet network, the baseband data.

14. The method of claim 13 , wherein each of the plurality of remote units is configured to synchronize the respective remote unit local clock to the reference timing source using respective timing messages communicated over the switched Ethernet network with the respective remote unit.

15. The method of claim 12 , wherein the controller and the plurality of remote units are configured to serve a same cell.

16. The method of claim 12 , wherein each of the plurality of remote units is configured to perform at least some baseband processing associated with wirelessly communicating with the user equipment.

17. The method of claim 16 , wherein the plurality of remote units are configured to perform inverse Fast Fourier Transform (iFFT) processing associated with wirelessly communicating with the user equipment in a downlink direction and are configured to perform Fast Fourier Transform (FFT) processing associated with wirelessly communicating with the user equipment in an uplink direction.

18. The method of claim 11 , wherein the controller includes or is in communication with the reference timing source.

19. The method of claim 18 , wherein the remote unit is configured to communicate the timing messages over the switched Ethernet network with the controller.

20. The method of claim 11 , wherein the timing messages comprise IEEE 1588 timing messages.
