Abstract

A passive optical network system having a node that is optically coupled to optical line terminals (OLTs), and that is optically coupled to optical network units (ONUs). The node includes at least one fiber link module (FLM), each FLM including an upstream multiplex conversion device (MCD), and a downstream MCD. The upstream MCD receives an upstream optical signal from the ONUs, converts the upstream optical signal to an upstream electrical signal, and transmits a regenerated upstream optical signal to the OLTs. The downstream MCD receives a downstream optical signal from the OLTs, converts the downstream optical signal to a downstream electrical signal, and transmits a regenerated downstream optical signal to the ONUs.

Claims (11)

1. A device configured suitable to be used in an optical network that includes at least one optical line terminal (OLT) and at least one optical network unit (ONU), the device including at least one of a wavelength division multiplexer and a wavelength division demultiplexer, said device comprising:

an upstream multiplex conversion device (MCD) suitable for connection to a respective port of each of at least one of a wavelength division multiplexer and a wavelength division demultiplexer, the upstream MCD comprising:

an upstream optical receiver configured to receive an upstream optical signal from said at least one ONU;

an upstream optical transmitter configured to transmit a regenerated upstream optical signal to said at least one OLT, the upstream optical transmitter including an optical emission device configured to convert an upstream electrical signal to the regenerated upstream optical signal;

the upstream optical receiver is a burst-mode receiver electrically coupled to the upstream optical transmitter;

the upstream multiplex conversion device (MCD) configured to provide an enable/disable signal for the optical emission device;

a downstream multiplex conversion device (MCD) suitable for connection to a respective port of each of at least one of a wavelength division multiplexer and a wavelength division demultiplexer, the downstream MCD comprising:

a downstream optical receiver configured to receive a downstream optical signal from said at least one OLT, wherein the downstream optical signal is a wavelength division multiplexing (WDM) signal;

a downstream optical transmitter configured to transmit a regenerated downstream optical signal to said at least one ONU, wherein the downstream optical receiver is electrically coupled to the downstream optical transmitter;

the upstream MCD and downstream MCD of said device is suitable for connection to a respective port of each of at least one of a wavelength division multiplexer and a wavelength division demultiplexer;

wherein said upstream optical receiver provides a signal to said optical emission device to provide said enable/disable signal.
