Abstract

An apparatus for sterilizing items and storing the sterilized items prior to use includes a container configured to receive items to be sterilized, a trap door coupled with the container, and a mechanism operatively coupled with the trap door and the container. The trap door is reconfigurable between an open configuration providing a fluid passage into the apparatus and a closed configuration in which the items are sealed within the apparatus. The mechanism is configured for selective reconfiguration of the trap door from the closed configuration to the open configuration and to automatically reconfigure the trap door from the open configuration to the closed configuration after completion of a sterilization cycle for items disposed within the apparatus.

Claims (20)

1. A method comprising reconfiguring a trap door of a container to an open configuration prior to or during a target portion of a sterilization cycle for one or more surgical implements by providing instructions from a control unit to cause an electromagnetic actuator housed in the container or housed directly on the container to push the trap door toward the open configuration, the trap door reconfigurable between a closed configuration in which the trap door and the container at least partially define an internal volume of the container that is sealed and the open configuration in which the trap door is displaced from the container to form a fluid passage between the internal volume and an external volume within a sterilization chamber and external to the container.

2. The method of claim 1 , wherein the reconfiguring the trap door to the open configuration comprises energizing the electromagnetic actuator to push the trap door toward the open configuration with an amount of force sufficient to overcome a biasing force that is provided by a biasing mechanism and that biases the trap door toward the closed configuration.

3. The method of claim 1 , further comprising reconfiguring the trap door to the closed configuration at an end of the target portion of the sterilization cycle.

4. The method of claim 3 , wherein the reconfiguring the trap door to the closed configuration comprises controlling the electromagnetic actuator to pull the trap door toward the closed configuration.

5. The method of claim 1 , wherein the reconfiguring the trap door to the open configuration prior to or during the target portion of the sterilization cycle comprises reconfiguring the trap door to the open configuration prior to the target portion of the sterilization cycle.

6. The method of claim 1 , wherein the reconfiguring the trap door to the open configuration prior to or during the target portion of the sterilization cycle comprises reconfiguring the trap door to the open configuration during the target portion of the sterilization cycle.

7. A method comprising reconfiguring a trap door of a container to an open configuration prior to or during a target portion of a sterilization cycle for one or more surgical implements by providing instructions from a control unit to cause an electromagnetic actuator housed in the container or housed directly on the container to pull the trap door toward the open configuration, the trap door reconfigurable between a closed configuration in which the trap door and the container at least partially define an internal volume of the container that is sealed and the open configuration in which the trap door is displaced from the container to form a fluid passage between the internal volume and an external volume within a sterilization chamber and external to the container.

8. The method of claim 7 , wherein the reconfiguring the trap door to the open configuration comprises energizing the electromagnetic actuator to pull the trap door toward the open configuration with an amount of force sufficient to overcome a biasing force that is provided by a biasing mechanism and that biases the trap door toward the closed configuration.

9. The method of claim 7 , further comprising reconfiguring the trap door to the closed configuration at an end of the target portion of the sterilization cycle.

10. The method of claim 9 , wherein the reconfiguring the trap door to the closed configuration comprises controlling the electromagnetic actuator to push the trap door toward the closed configuration.

11. The method of claim 7 , wherein the reconfiguring the trap door to the open configuration prior to or during the target portion of the sterilization cycle comprises reconfiguring the trap door to the open configuration prior to the target portion of the sterilization cycle.

12. The method of claim 7 , wherein the reconfiguring the trap door to the open configuration prior to or during the target portion of the sterilization cycle comprises reconfiguring the trap door to the open configuration during the target portion of the sterilization cycle.

13. A method comprising reconfiguring a trap door of a container to an open configuration prior to or during a target portion of a sterilization cycle for one or more surgical implements by providing instructions from a control unit housed in the container or housed directly on the container to cause an electromagnetic actuator to move the trap door toward the open configuration, the trap door reconfigurable between a closed configuration in which the trap door and the container at least partially define an internal volume of the container that is sealed and the open configuration in which the trap door is displaced from the container to form a fluid passage between the internal volume and an external volume within a sterilization chamber and external to the container.

14. The method of claim 13 , wherein the reconfiguring the trap door to the open configuration comprises energizing the electromagnetic actuator to move the trap door toward the open configuration with an amount of force sufficient to overcome a biasing force that is provided by a biasing mechanism and that biases the trap door toward the closed configuration.

15. The method of claim 13 , further comprising reconfiguring the trap door to the closed configuration at an end of the target portion of the sterilization cycle.

16. The method of claim 15 , wherein the reconfiguring the trap door to the closed configuration comprises controlling the electromagnetic actuator to move the trap door toward the closed configuration.

17. The method of claim 13 , wherein the reconfiguring the trap door to the open configuration prior to or during the target portion of the sterilization cycle comprises reconfiguring the trap door to the open configuration prior to the target portion of the sterilization cycle.

18. The method of claim 13 , wherein the reconfiguring the trap door to the open configuration prior to or during the target portion of the sterilization cycle comprises reconfiguring the trap door to the open configuration during the target portion of the sterilization cycle.

19. The method of claim 13 , wherein the instructions from the control unit to cause the electromagnetic actuator to move the trap door toward the open configuration include instructions from the control unit to cause the electromagnetic actuator to push the trap door toward the open configuration.

20. The method of claim 13 , wherein the instructions from the control unit to cause the electromagnetic actuator to move the trap door toward the open configuration include instructions from the control unit to cause the electromagnetic actuator to pull the trap door toward the open configuration.
