Abstract

A horizontal flow water treatment method and wetland biofilter apparatus provides a chamber with impermeable outer walls spaced away from permeable interior walls of a media filtration bed such that a catch basin is formed between the outer walls and the interior walls. The catch basin creates an open area around the perimeter of the interior walls for influent water to fill within the open area before penetrating the filtration media, providing a large surface area for influent water to interact with the media filtration bed. The influent water enters the catch basin in a horizontal flow path to provide for pre-settling of particulates before making contact with the filtration media. The biofilter design increases the available surface area of the media filtration bed by up to four times for a given volume of water, and thereby minimizes the loading or infiltration rate on the media filtration bed.

Claims (21)

1. A biofilter comprising:

one or more outer side walls defining a first chamber with a floor;

a first media filtration bed extending from the floor within the first chamber and enclosed by one or more permeable inner side walls extending from the floor, the one or more permeable inner side walls having lower ends in contact with the floor and the one or more permeable inner side walls being separated from the one or more outer side walls by a void area for receiving an influent,

and an outlet opening portion coupled to an outside of the first chamber, the outlet opening portion connected to a hollow tube configured to receive influent filtered by the first media filtration bed;

a cover over the void area;

wherein the first media filtration bed has an open top such that the first media filtration bed is exposed.

2. The biofilter of claim 1 , further comprising a second void area defined by one or more permeable inner side walls, and the one or more inner side walls being separated from the an outer side wall and the second void area in fluid communication to an outlet opening.

3. The biofilter of claim 1 , further comprising a permeable collection tube disposed within the first media filtration bed configured to collect the influent from the first media filtration bed as filtered influent and communicate the filtered influent to an outlet opening.

4. The biofilter of claim 1 , further comprising a second media filtration bed within the first chamber.

5. The biofilter of claim 1 , wherein the first media filtration bed contains live plant material.

6. The biofilter of claim 1 , the influent enters directly into the void space directly from the top of the first chamber.

7. The biofilter of claim 1 , wherein the first media filtration bed contains one or more granular filtration media composed of organic, inert, or sorptive substances that provide physical, chemical and biological filtration of contaminated fluid.

8. The biofilter of claim 1 , wherein the one or more outer side walls comprise an intake opening into the void area.

9. The biofilter of claim 1 , wherein the cover is formed by plates configured to prevent water from entering directly into the void area from above.

10. A biofilter comprising:

one or more outer side walls defining a first chamber;

a first media filtration bed disposed within the first chamber and enclosed by one or more permeable inner side walls, the one or more permeable inner side walls being separated from the one or more outer side walls by a void area for receiving an influent; and

an outlet tube disposed horizontally across a lower portion of the biofilter and coupling a permeable collection tube to an outlet opening:

a cover over the void area;

wherein the first media filtration bed has an open top such that the first media filtration bed is exposed.

11. The biofilter of claim 10 , wherein the cover is formed by plates configured to prevent water from entering directly into the void area from above.
