Abstract

A method of planning an orthodontic treatment for a patient may include receiving a digital representation of the patient's dentition in an initial arrangement, determining a first geometry for an upper shell of an orthodontic appliance. The first geometry may include a first plurality of tooth-receiving cavities shaped to receive an upper jaw of the patient's dentition and an upper cutout disposed along an upper gingival edge of the upper shell. The method may also include determining a location of an upper elastic band receiving member. The location of the upper elastic band receiving member may correspond to a position of the upper cutout. The location of the upper elastic band receiving member may be determined so as to generate a tooth repositioning force to facilitate repositioning of the patient's dentition when an elastic band is secured to the upper elastic band receiving member.

Claims (50)

1. A computer implemented method, the method comprising:

receiving a digital representation of a patient's dentition in an initial arrangement;

determining a plurality of stages to incrementally reposition the patient's dentition from the initial arrangement towards a target arrangement, wherein the plurality of stages is determined at least in part on the digital representation;

determining a first geometry for an upper shell of an orthodontic appliance corresponding to one of the plurality of stages, wherein the first geometry comprises:

a first plurality of tooth-receiving cavities shaped to receive an upper jaw of the patient's dentition, and

an upper cutout disposed along an upper gingival edge of the upper shell;

determining a location of an upper elastic band receiving member, wherein the location of the upper elastic band receiving member corresponds to a position of the upper cutout;

determining a second geometry for a lower shell of the orthodontic appliance corresponding to the one of the plurality of stages, wherein the second geometry comprises:

a second plurality of tooth-receiving cavities shaped to receive a lower jaw of the patient's dentition, and

a lower cutout disposed along a lower gingival edge of the lower shell;

determining a location of a lower elastic band receiving member, wherein the location of the lower elastic band receiving member corresponds to a position of the lower cutout; and

causing a fabrication machine to directly fabricate the upper shell and the lower shell,

wherein the location of the upper elastic band receiving member and the location of the lower elastic band receiving member are determined so as to generate a tooth repositioning force to facilitate repositioning of the patient's dentition from the initial arrangement towards the target arrangement when an elastic band is secured to the upper elastic band receiving member and the lower elastic band receiving member.

2. The computer implemented method of claim 1 , wherein the method further comprises:

trimming the upper shell to create the upper cutout;

and

trimming the lower shell to create the lower cutout.

3. The computer implemented method of claim 2 , wherein the orthodontic appliance is fabricated prior to the patient wearing any aligners in a corresponding orthodontic treatment plan.

4. The computer implemented method of claim 1 , wherein each of the upper cutout and the lower cutout extends a minimum distance from the location of the upper elastic band receiving member and the location of the lower elastic band receiving member, respectively.

5. The computer implemented method of claim 4 , wherein the minimum distance is at least 0.5 mm.

6. The computer implemented method of claim 1 , wherein at least one of the upper cutout and the lower cutout comprises a button cutout.

7. The computer implemented method of claim 1 , wherein at least one of the upper cutout and the lower cutout is arcuate.

8. The computer implemented method of claim 1 , wherein the digital representation comprises a 3D digital scan of the patient's dentition.

9. The computer implemented method of claim 1 , wherein the upper elastic band receiving member comprises a base and a band-receiving portion; and wherein the upper cutout is sized to accommodate the base of the upper elastic band receiving member.

10. The computer implemented method of claim 1 , wherein the lower elastic band receiving member comprises a base and a band-receiving portion; and wherein the lower cutout is sized to accommodate the base of the lower elastic band receiving member.

11. A method of planning an orthodontic treatment for a patient, the method comprising:

receiving a digital representation of the patient's dentition in an initial arrangement;

determining a plurality of stages to incrementally reposition the patient's dentition from the initial arrangement towards a target arrangement, wherein the plurality of stages are determined at least in part on the digital representation;

determining a first geometry for an upper shell of an orthodontic appliance corresponding to one of the plurality of stages, wherein the first geometry comprises

a first plurality of tooth-receiving cavities shaped to receive an upper jaw of the patient's dentition, and

an upper cutout disposed along an upper gingival edge of the upper shell;

determining a location of an upper elastic band receiving member, wherein the location of the upper elastic band receiving member corresponds to a position of the upper cutout;

determining a second geometry for a lower shell of the orthodontic appliance corresponding to the one of the plurality of stages, wherein the second geometry comprises

a second plurality of tooth-receiving cavities shaped to receive a lower jaw of the patient's dentition, and

a lower cutout disposed along a lower gingival edge of the lower shell;

determining a location of a lower elastic band receiving member, wherein the location of the lower elastic band receiving member corresponds to a position of the lower cutout; and

directly fabricating the upper shell and the lower shell,

wherein the location of the upper elastic band receiving member and the location of the lower elastic band receiving member are determined so as to generate a tooth repositioning force to facilitate repositioning of the patient's dentition from the initial arrangement towards the target arrangement when an elastic band is secured to the upper elastic band receiving member and the lower elastic band receiving member.

12. The method of claim 11 , the method further comprising:

trimming the upper shell to create the upper cutout;

and

trimming the lower shell to create the lower cutout.

13. The method of claim 12 , wherein the orthodontic appliance is fabricated prior to the patient wearing any aligners in a corresponding orthodontic treatment plan.

14. The method of claim 11 , wherein each of the upper cutout and the lower cutout extends a minimum distance from the location of the upper elastic band receiving member and the location of the lower elastic band receiving member, respectively.

15. The method of claim 14 , wherein the minimum distance is at least 0.5 mm.

16. The method of claim 11 , wherein at least one of the upper cutout and the lower cutout comprises a button cutout.

17. The method of claim 11 , wherein at least one of the upper cutout and the lower cutout is arcuate.

18. The method of claim 11 , wherein the first geometry and the second geometry are determined at least in part on the digital representation, and wherein the digital representation comprises a 3D digital scan of the patient's dentition.

19. The method of claim 11 , wherein the upper elastic band receiving member comprises a base and a band-receiving portion; and wherein the upper cutout is sized to accommodate the base of the upper elastic band receiving member.
