Chevron osteotomy tools and methods
A targeting guide is disclosed includes a handle extending substantially along a longitudinal axis. The longitudinal handle defines one or more burr holes extending from a first side of the handle to a second side of the handle. A head is coupled to a distal end of the longitudinal handle. The head defines a plurality of guide holes sized and configured to receive a k-wire therethrough.
1 . A method of forming an osteotomy comprising:
inserting a burr at a surgical site;
positioning a targeting guide adjacent to an outer surface of a surgical site, wherein the targeting guide includes a first body portion defining a plurality of apertures and a first passageway, the plurality of apertures are disposed adjacent to a first end of the first body portion, each aperture of the plurality of apertures sized and configured to guide at least one first elongate surgical instrument along a respective trajectory, the first passageway extending along at least a portion of a length of the first body portion;
a second body portion configured to move relative to the first body portion along a path defined by the first passageway, the second body portion including at least one surface configured to abut a first bone portion when the targeting guide is placed adjacent to the first bone portion and a second bone portion, the second body portion defining an opening sized and configured to receive a second elongate surgical instrument;
a locking mechanism configured to lock the second body portion at a variable position along the first passageway defined by the first body portion;
providing an elevator comprising a body extending substantially along a longitudinal axis, a displacement tip extending from a distal end of the body, a bone retaining section defined by the body, and a gripping handle surrounding the body;
inserting the displacement tip into a cut formed in a bone;
rotating the body by grasping the gripping handle to displace a first portion of the bone from a second portion of the bone to form an osteotomy;
securing a distal portion of the bone within the bone retaining section after displacement;
inserting one or more elongate surgical instruments into at least one bone at the surgical site, wherein the one or more elongate surgical instruments are inserted through a plurality of guide holes formed in a head of the targeting guide; and
removing the targeting guide and the burr from the surgical site.
2 . The method of claim 1 , wherein the bone retaining section comprises a concave retaining section.
3 . The method of claim 2 , wherein the concave retaining section is sized and configured to secure a distal portion of a metatarsal after the displacement.
4 . The method of claim 2 , wherein inserting the displacement tip comprises inserting the displacement tip into a cut formed in the metatarsal.
5 . The method of claim 1 , wherein the gripping handle is a large gripping handle configured to provide additional gripping surface to a user.
6 . The method of claim 1 , wherein the displacement tip has a predetermined radius of curvature.
7 . The method of claim 6 , wherein a distal end of the displacement tip is rounded.
8 . The method of claim 6 , wherein a distal end of the displacement tip is pointed.
9 . The method of claim 1 , wherein inserting the displacement tip comprises inserting the displacement tip into a cut formed in the bone.
10 . The method of claim 1 , wherein rotating the longitudinal body displaces a first portion of the bone from a second portion of the bone to form a chevron osteotomy.
11 . The method of claim 1 , wherein the bone retaining section comprises an open area for securing a portion of a bone.
12 . The method of claim 1 , wherein, after the displacement, securing the distal portion of the bone within the bone retaining section maintains the distal portion in a fixed position.
