Abstract

This invention is directed to neuroprotective compositions and methods of using the same to treat neurodegenerative diseases.

Claims (11)

1 . A method for preventing, treating, and/or reducing the severity of a neurodegenerative disease in a subject, the method comprising administering to said subject in need thereof a therapeutically effective amount of the neuroprotective compound according to any one of the following structures:

a pharmaceutically acceptable salt thereof.

2 . The method of claim 1 , wherein the neurodegenerative diseases comprises Alzheimer's disease, global cerebral ischemia, amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, traumatic brain injury-induced epileptogenesis, peri-operative neuronal and/or cardiac stress, epilepsy, noise-induced hearing loss, or a combination thereof.

3 . A method for preventing, treating, and/or reducing the severity of a disease and/or condition associated with glutamate-induced excitotoxicity in a subject, the method comprising administering to said subject in need thereof a therapeutically effective amount of the neuroprotective compound according to any one of the following structures:

a pharmaceutically acceptable salt thereof.

4 . A method for effective prophylactic and management strategy to suppress neuronal death and cognitive impairment, the method comprising administering to said subject in need thereof a therapeutically effective amount of the neuroprotective compound according to any one of the following structures:

a pharmaceutically acceptable salt thereof.

5 . The method of claim 4 , wherein the diseases comprises Alzheimer's disease, cerebral ischemia, amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, traumatic brain injury, pen-operative neuronal and/or cardiac stress, epilepsy, noise-induced hearing loss, or a combination thereof.

6 . The method of claim 4 , wherein the condition comprises cognitive impairment, neurodegeneration, neuronal cell death, excitotoxic cell death, or a combination thereof.

7 . The method of any one of claims 1-6 , further comprising administering concurrently or subsequently a therapeutically effective amount of an open-channel N-methyl-Daspartate (NMDA) receptor blocker to the subject.

8 . The method of claim 7 , wherein the NMDA receptor blocker comprises memantine.
