Abstract

A method for delivering nitric oxide therapy to a subject can include administering a composition including a nitric-oxide releasing agent and silica to the subject and releasing a therapeutic amount of nitric oxide from the composition.

Claims (13)

1 . A nitric-oxide delivery device comprising:

a composition comprising a nitric-oxide-releasing agent and silica, wherein the silica is wetted with an antioxidant, wherein the composition is present in a therapeutic amount,

and wherein the nitric-oxide delivery device delivers the therapeutic amount of nitric oxide to a patient, and wherein the therapeutic amount is greater than 100 ppm,

wherein the silica is present as a silica gel or as a sintered mixture of silica gel and one or more thermoplastic resins.

2 . The nitric-oxide delivery device of claim 1 , wherein the nitric-oxide releasing agent comprises a biopolymer.

3 . The nitric-oxide delivery device of claim 2 , wherein the biopolymer comprises N 2 O 2 -functional groups.

4 . The nitric-oxide delivery device of claim 3 , wherein the nitric-oxide releasing agent is represented by a formula:

wherein X is an organic or inorganic moiety and X′ is an organic or inorganic substituent, a pharmaceutically acceptable metal center, or a pharmaceutically acceptable cation.

5 . The nitric-oxide delivery device of claim 4 , wherein X is (CH 3 ) 2 CHNH, CH 3 CH 2 ) 2 N, H 2 N(CH 2 ) 3 NH 2 + (CH 2 ) 4 N[N(O)NO] − (CH 2 ) 3 NH 2 , 2-(ethylamino)ethylamine, as in the zwitterion CH 3 CH 2 N[N(O)NO] − CH 2 CH 2 NH 3 + , 3-(n-propylamino)propylamine, as in the zwitterion CH 3 CH 2 CH 2 N[N(O)NO] − CH 2 CH 2 CH 2 NH 3 + ), O − , or any derivatives thereof.

6 . The nitric-oxide delivery device of claim 1 , wherein the composition further comprises water.

7 . The nitric-oxide delivery device of claim 1 , wherein the antioxidant comprises at least one of vitamin C or vitamin E.

8 . The nitric-oxide delivery device of claim 1 , wherein the antioxidant comprises antioxidant includes at least one of ascorbic acid, alpha tocopherol, or gamma tocopherol.

9 . The nitric-oxide delivery device of claim 1 , wherein the nitric-oxide delivery device comprises an inhaler, nasal plug, an adhesive strip, ointment or any combination thereof.
