Abstract

A method for providing build material to an additive manufacturing system ( 100 ) includes moving the build material ( 10 ) from a dosing hopper ( 240 ) to an interior space defined by one or more supply sidewalls of a supply receptacle ( 110 ) and a piston ( 130 ) positioned within the supply receptacle ( 110 ), and moving the piston toward a working surface ( 102 ) of the additive manufacturing system, thereby moving build material within the interior space to the working surface.

Claims (18)

1 . A system comprising:

a build area positioned along a working surface;

a supply receptacle defining one or more supply receptacle sidewalls and an upwardly-facing receptacle opening;

a piston engaged with the one or more supply receptacle sidewalls, wherein:

the piston, the upwardly-facing receptacle opening, and the one or more supply receptacle sidewalls at least partially define an interior space; and

the piston is positionable between an extended position, in which the interior space has an extended volume, and a retracted position, in which the interior space has a retracted volume that is greater than the extended volume;

a dosing hopper positioned above and in selective communication with the supply receptacle, wherein the dosing hopper is structurally configured to deliver build material to the interior space and wherein the dosing hopper defines a dosing volume;

a conveyance hopper in communication with the dosing hopper, the conveyance hopper defining a supply volume, wherein the supply volume is greater than the dosing volume; and

a supply chute positioned between the dosing hopper and the interior space and having a supply chute opening into the interior space positioned below the upwardly-facing receptacle opening, wherein the interior space defines a dose volume defined by the one or more supply receptacle sidewalls, the upwardly-facing receptacle opening, and the supply chute opening.

2 . The system of claim 1 , wherein the supply volume is greater than a volume defined by the build area.

3 . The system of claim 1 , wherein a combination of the supply volume and dosing volume is greater than a volume defined by the build area.

4 . The system of claim 1 , wherein the dose volume is at least about 3500 cubic centimeters.

5 . The system of claim 4 , wherein the supply chute defines a supply chute volume that is at least about 3150 cubic centimeters.

6 . The system of claim 5 , wherein the piston, the one or more supply receptacle sidewalls, and the supply chute opening define a retracted volume with the piston in the retracted position that is less than the dose volume.

7 . The system of claim 6 , wherein the supply volume is at least about 135,000 cubic centimeters.

8 . The system of claim 6 , wherein the supply volume and the dose volume are collectively at least 135,000 cubic centimeters.

9 . The system of claim 1 , further comprising an excess return in selective communication with the interior space.

10 . The system of claim 9 , wherein the excess return defines a return volume that is less than the dosing volume.
