Refreshable polycrystalline diamond compact (PDC) drill bits
A method for refreshing a drill bit. The method includes providing a drill bit with refreshing blades, wherein the refreshing blades are configured to move into a cutting position upon receipt of a signal, performing drilling operations within a well, and obtaining, using a computer processor, drilling data. The method further includes determining, using the computer processor, a relative aggressiveness of the drill bit, comparing, using the computer processor, the relative aggressiveness of the drill bit with a target minimum aggressiveness of the drill bit, and controlling the moving of the refreshing blades into the cutting position in the drill bit in response to a result of the comparing of the relative aggressiveness of the drill bit with the target minimum aggressiveness of the drill bit.
1 . A method for refreshing a drill bit, the method comprising:
providing a drill bit comprising a rotatable blade with a plurality of cutters circumferentially disposed around a circumference of the rotatable blade wherein the rotatable blade rotates the plurality of cutters into various cutting positions upon receipt of a signal,
wherein the plurality of cutters comprises a portion recessed within a cavity of the drill bit while a remaining portion is exposed relative to the cavity;
performing drilling operations within a well;
obtaining, using a computer processor, drilling data;
determining, using the computer processor, a relative aggressiveness of the drill bit;
comparing, using the computer processor, the relative aggressiveness of the drill bit with a target minimum aggressiveness of the drill bit, and
rotating the rotatable blade into the various cutting positions in response to a result of the comparing of the relative aggressiveness of the drill bit with the target minimum aggressiveness of the drill bit,
wherein rotating the rotatable blade comprises exchanging the portion of the plurality of cutters that was recessed within the cavity with the remaining portion of the plurality of cutters that was exposed.
2 . The method of claim 1 , wherein the drilling data comprises rate of penetration.
3 . The method of claim 1 , wherein controlling the drill bit in response to the comparing comprises initiating a refreshing of the drill bit.
4 . The method of claim 1 , wherein rotating the rotatable blade comprises initiating translation when a translation signal is received, wherein the translation signal may be mechanical, hydraulic, electrical-mechanical, or wireless.
5 . The method of claim 1 , wherein the drill bit comprises a polycrystalline diamond compact (PDC) cutter.
6 . The method of claim 1 , wherein providing the drill bit comprises using a drill string of a well system.
7 . The method of claim 1 , wherein obtaining drilling data comprises obtaining drilling data from a well control system and a measurement device, wherein drilling data from the well control system comprises hydrostatic pressure, pump rate, fluid properties, rate of penetration, weight on bit, vibration, and/or torque.
8 . The method of claim 7 , wherein the measurement device comprises a drilling tool.
9 . The method of claim 1 , wherein determining the relative aggressiveness comprises calculating a mechanical specific energy.
10 . The method of claim 9 , wherein determining the relative aggressiveness comprises monitoring a trend of the calculated mechanical specific energy.
