Abstract

A propulsor fan and drive system having reduced noise emission is disclosed. The propulsor fan includes a blade fan having a plurality of blades. The blade fan is tensioned at the tips of the plurality of blades. By tensioning the tips of the blades, an angle of the blades is maintained during operation of the propulsor fan thereby reducing noise that may result from changes in the angle of the blades.

Claims (36)

1 . A method of propulsor fan operation comprising:

providing a propulsor fan comprising:

a first ring having a first diameter;

a second ring having a second diameter larger than the first diameter;

twisted blades radially extending between and connected to the first ring and the second ring, wherein the first ring and the second ring tension the twisted blades such that a pitch of the blades during operation is substantially the same as a pitch of the blades at rest, and wherein each twisted blade comprises:

a first end connected to the first ring at a first angle; and

a second end, opposite the first end, comprising a blade tip and connected to the second ring at a second angle different than the first angle; and

rotating the propulsor fan at a blade tip speed of 300-450 feet per second to provide an ultrasonic blade passage frequency.

2 . The method of claim 1 , wherein the ultrasonic blade passage frequency is between 16,000 Hz to 20,000 Hz.

3 . The method of claim 1 , wherein the rotation the propulsor fan comprises rotating the propulsor fan using a motor operating at 20,000 rotations-per-minute (RPM) to 40,000 RPM.

4 . The method of claim 1 , wherein each twisted blade comprises an airfoil between the first end and the second end.

5 . The method of claim 1 , wherein:

a portion of each twisted blade of the twisted blades overlaps a portion of another twisted blade of the twisted blade; and

a twist of each twisted blade begins at a position of the twisted blade that is closer to the first ring than the second ring.

6 . The method of claim 1 , wherein the propulsor fan has a diameter between 0.5 feet and 5.5 feet.

7 . The method of claim 6 , wherein the propulsor fan has a diameter between 0.5 feet and 1 foot.

8 . The method of claim 1 , wherein the twisted blades comprise between 20 and 840 twisted blades.

9 . The method of claim 8 , wherein the twisted blades comprise between 20 and 50 twisted blades.

10 . The method of claim 1 , wherein the first ring, the second ring, and the twisted blades are made of a composite material.

11 . A propulsor fan comprising:

a first ring having a first diameter;

a second ring having a second diameter larger than the first diameter;

a quantity of twisted blades radially extending between and connected to the first ring and the second ring, wherein the first ring and the second ring tension the twisted blades such that a pitch of the blades during operation is substantially the same as a pitch of the blades at rest, wherein the quantity of twisted blades is configured to provide an ultrasonic blade passage frequency based on the propulsor fan rotating at a blade tip speed of 300-450 feet per second, and wherein each twisted blade comprises:

a first end connected to the first ring at a first angle; and

a second end, opposite the first end, comprising a blade tip and connected to the second ring at a second angle different than the first angle.

12 . The propulsor fan of claim 11 , wherein the ultrasonic blade passage frequency is between 16,000 Hz to 20,000 Hz.

13 . The propulsor fan of claim 11 , wherein the quantity of twisted blades is configured to provide the ultrasonic blade passage frequency further based on the propulsor fan being rotated by a motor operating at 20,000 rotations-per-minute (RPM) to 40,000 RPM.

14 . The propulsor fan of claim 11 , wherein each twisted blade comprises an airfoil between the first end and the second end.

15 . The propulsor fan of claim 11 , wherein:

a portion of each twisted blade of the twisted blades overlaps a portion of another twisted blade of the twisted blade; and

a twist of each twisted blade begins at a position of the twisted blade that is closer to the first ring than the second ring.

16 . The propulsor fan of claim 11 , wherein the propulsor fan has a diameter between 0.5 feet and 5.5 feet.

17 . The propulsor fan of claim 16 , wherein the propulsor fan has a diameter between 0.5 feet and 1 foot.

18 . The propulsor fan of claim 11 , wherein the quantity of twisted blades is between 20 and 840.

19 . The propulsor fan of claim 18 , wherein the quantity of twisted blades is between 20 and 50.

20 . The propulsor fan of claim 11 , wherein the first ring, the second ring, and the twisted blades are made of a composite material.
