Foldable firearm
The present disclosure describes a foldable firearm that collapses into a folded state under spring pressure. The foldable firearm may include a foldable grip assembly. The foldable grip assembly may include a foldable pistol grip, a foldable trigger assembly, a folding bar, and a foldable hand stop. The foldable grip assembly may fold into the top shell of the foldable firearm. The foldable firearm may also include an ambidextrous charging handle assembly that may include a bottom portion, a top portion, a guide bar, and two opposing charging handles. The charging handles may be pulled to unfold the foldable firearm, and/or butterflied such that pivoting one charging handle causes the other charging handle to pivot. The first-pivoted charging handle may then be pulled rearwards to unfold the firearm. The first-pivoted charging handle may then be pulled further rearwards to rack the slide of the foldable firearm.
1 . A foldable firearm comprising:
a receiver configured to couple to a foldable trigger grip assembly;
a barrel having a muzzle, the barrel received in the receiver;
a top shell at least partially surrounding the barrel, the top shell having an ambidextrous charging handle assembly and a locking mechanism arranged thereon; and
a bottom shell at least partially surrounding the receiver, the bottom shell having a hinged tail, wherein the hinged tail is configured to: rotate about a pivot axis on the bottom shell, detachably engage with the locking mechanism when the foldable firearm is in a folded configuration, and disengage from the locking mechanism via actuating the ambidextrous charging handle assembly,
wherein at least a portion of the hinged tail is located proximate the muzzle when the foldable firearm is in a folded configuration, and wherein the muzzle is at least partially covered by the hinged tail in response to the foldable firearm being in the folded configuration.
2 . The foldable firearm of claim 1 , wherein the hinged tail covers the muzzle when the foldable firearm is in the folded configuration.
3 . The foldable firearm of claim 1 , wherein the hinged tail surrounds the muzzle when the foldable firearm is in the folded configuration.
4 . The foldable firearm of claim 1 , further comprising a spring biasing the hinged tail to a position substantially perpendicular to the bottom shell.
5 . The foldable firearm of claim 1 , wherein the hinged tail is configured to rotate about the pivot axis when the hinged tail contacts a shoulder pocket of a user.
6 . The foldable firearm of claim 1 , wherein the hinged tail is configured to fold in response to the hinged tail contacting a shoulder pocket of a user.
7 . The foldable firearm of claim 1 , wherein the hinged tail comprises an angled clearance configured to determine a stopping angle of the hinged tail relative to the bottom shell.
8 . The foldable firearm of claim 1 , wherein the hinged tail is configured to contact an arm of a user when the foldable firearm is in an unfolded configuration.
9 . The foldable firearm of claim 1 , wherein the foldable firearm is configured to fold into a box-like shape when the foldable firearm is in the folded configuration.
10 . The foldable firearm of claim 1 , wherein the hinged tail comprises an aperture configured to receive a bracing strap.
11 . A method of operating a foldable firearm, the foldable firearm comprising:
a receiver configured to couple to a foldable trigger grip assembly;
a barrel having a muzzle, the barrel received in the receiver;
a top shell having an ambidextrous charging handle assembly and a locking mechanism arranged thereon; and
a bottom shell having a hinged tail, wherein the hinged tail is configured to: rotate about a pivot axis on the bottom shell, detachably engage with the locking mechanism when the foldable firearm is in a folded configuration, and disengage from the locking mechanism via actuating the ambidextrous charging handle assembly;
wherein at least a portion of the hinged tail is located proximate the muzzle when the foldable firearm is in a folded configuration;
the method comprising:
covering the muzzle with the hinged tail in response to the foldable firearm transitioning to the folded configuration.
12 . The method of claim 11 , further comprising surrounding the muzzle with the hinged tail in response to the foldable firearm transitioning to the folded configuration.
13 . The method of claim 11 , further comprising biasing the hinged tail to a position substantially perpendicular to the bottom shell.
14 . The method of claim 11 , further comprising rotating the hinged tail about the pivot axis in response to the hinged tail contacting a shoulder pocket of a user.
15 . The method of claim 11 , further comprising contacting the hinged tail to an arm of a user when the foldable firearm is in an unfolded configuration and the foldable firearm is held by a user and arms of the user are at least partially extended.
16 . The method of claim 11 , further comprising uncovering the muzzle in response to the foldable firearm transitioning to an unfolded configuration.
