Abstract

A cash recycler is described. The cash recycler includes a communication device connected to a core network of a bank; an internal vault; an input bin for receiving bank notes; an output bin; a counter having sensors that count and evaluate bank notes for fitness, authenticity, and denomination, and a conveyor configured to convey the bank notes into the internal vault; a user interface including control circuitry configured to authenticate a non-teller user by accessing authentication information via the communication device based upon bank account records within a bank database; and a cash dispenser configured to transfer bank notes from the internal vault to the output bin upon authentication of the non-teller user and a transaction.

Claims (24)

1 . A cash recycler, comprising:

a communication device connected to a core network of a bank;

an internal vault;

an input bin for receiving bank notes;

an output bin;

a counter having sensors that count and evaluate bank notes for fitness, authenticity, and denomination;

a conveyor configured to convey the bank notes into the internal vault;

a user interface including control circuitry configured to authenticate a non-teller user by accessing authentication information from a bank database via the communication device, wherein the authentication information is based upon bank account records of the non-teller user stored within the bank database; and

a cash dispenser configured to transfer bank notes from the internal vault to the output bin upon authentication of the non-teller user and a transaction;

wherein the cash recycler is located at the bank and the communication device is further connected to an interbank network; and

wherein transactions by non-teller users of the bank are processed via the core network and transactions by non-teller users who are not customers of the bank are processed via the interbank network.

2 . The cash recycler of claim 1 ,

wherein bank notes of a first denomination deposited in the input bin are counted and evaluated by the counter and conveyed to the internal vault by the conveyor;

wherein a total amount of the bank notes of the first denomination is displayed in the user interface;

wherein the user interface is configured to allow the non-teller user to select bank notes of one or more second denominations, different from the first denomination, in exchange for the bank notes of the first denomination; and

wherein the cash recycler is configured to cause the cash dispenser to transfer the selected one or more second denominations from the internal vault to the output bin upon authentication of the non-teller user and exchange.

3 . The cash recycler of claim 1 ,

wherein bank notes deposited in the input bin are counted and evaluated by the counter and conveyed to the internal vault by the conveyor;

wherein a total amount of the bank notes is displayed in the user interface;

wherein the user interface is configured to allow the non-teller user to select an account from the bank account records within the bank database in which to deposit the total amount of the bank notes; and

wherein the control circuitry is configured to send a signal from the communication device to the bank via the core network indicating the account into which the total amount of bank notes is to be deposited.

4 . The cash recycler of claim 1 ,

wherein the user interface is configured to accept input from the non-teller user indicating an amount to be withdrawn from an account from the bank account records within the bank database as well as a number and denomination of bank notes that equal the amount to be withdrawn; and

wherein the control circuitry is configured to cause the cash dispenser to transfer the indicated number and denomination of bank notes from the internal vault to the output bin upon authentication of the non-teller user and the transaction.
