Abstract

Audio tones are detected by a device. An identifier of a user is extracted from the audio tones. The identifier of the user and status information associated with the device are transmitted to a remote server. The device is configured based on a rule received from the remote server, wherein the rule is based on times series data received from the device and indicative of usage of the device by the user.

Claims (48)

1 . A method, comprising:

detecting, by a device, audio tones, wherein the device is a modular outlet device comprising an inner wall housing that interfaces with power lines inside a wall and a housing that mates with the inner wall housing, the housing attached to an electronic device;

extracting an identifier of a user from the audio tones;

transmitting, to a remote server, the identifier of the user and status information associated with the device;

identifying, by the remote server, a type of the electronic device; and

configuring the device based on a rule received from the remote server, wherein the configuration is based on the type of the electronic device and time series data received from the device comprising usage information of the device by the user.

2 . The method of claim 1 , wherein the audio tones are received from a user device, the method further comprising:

sensing a proximity of the user device to the device based on beacons transmitted by the device.

3 . The method of claim 1 , wherein the status information associated with the device includes one or more of a power status, temperature information, or statuses of switches and relays.

4 . The method of claim 1 , wherein configuring the device based on the rule received from the remote server comprises:

controlling power settings on the device.

5 . The method of claim 1 , wherein configuring the device based on the rule received from the remote server comprises:

implementing user profiles on the device.

6 . The method of claim 1 , wherein configuring the device based on the rule received from the remote server comprises:

transmitting, by the remote server, a notification of the rule to a user device; and

receiving, at the device, the rule from the user device.

7 . The method of claim 1 , wherein the remote server includes a device shadow object that is a representation of the device and used to store and retrieve current state information for the device.

8 . A system, comprising:

a device, wherein the device is a modular outlet device comprising an inner wall housing that interfaces with power lines inside a wall and mates with a housing attached to an electronic device, the device configured to:

detect audio tones transmitted by a user device;

extract an identifier of a user from the audio tones; and

transmit a package of information to a remote server, wherein the package of information includes the identifier and a type of the electronic device; and

the remote server, the remote server configured to:

receive the package of information from the device;

maintain, based on the package of information, a shadow device that is a representation of the device; and

transmit a rule for the device based on the type of the electronic device and time series data associated with the shadow device.

9 . The system of claim 8 , wherein the package of information includes data that are based on the electronic device of the device.

10 . The system of claim 9 , wherein the electronic device is a thermostat and the package of information includes temperature information.

11 . The system of claim 9 , wherein the device includes an electric sensor and the package of information includes a measurement of current passing through the device.

12 . The system of claim 9 , wherein the package of information includes a status of a relay switch of the device.

13 . The system of claim 9 , wherein the electronic device comprises a camera.

14 . The system of claim 9 , wherein the rule is based on the electronic device of the device.

15 . The system of claim 8 , wherein the rule is transmitted to the user device.

16 . A modular outlet device, comprising:

a processor;

an inner wall housing that interfaces with power lines inside a wall and mates with a housing;

an electronic device attached to the housing;

a wireless network interface; and

a switch configured to control the electronic device based on a command received by the wireless network interface, wherein the processor is configured to:

detect audio tones;

extract an identifier of a user from the audio tones;

transmit via wireless network interface and to a remote server the identifier of the user and status information associated with the modular outlet device;

transmit an identifier associated with the electronic device; and

configure the modular outlet device based on a rule received from the remote server.

17 . The modular outlet device of claim 16 , wherein the electronic device is a temperature sensor and the status information associated with the modular outlet device comprises temperature information from the temperature sensor.

18 . The modular outlet device of claim 16 , wherein the electronic device is a camera.

19 . The modular outlet device of claim 16 , wherein the electronic device is a Bluetooth speaker or a microphone.

20 . The modular outlet device of claim 16 , wherein the electronic device comprises an electric current sensor configured to measure current passing through the electronic device.
