Abstract

A system includes a first device including a first transmitter and a first receiver, and a second device including a second transmitter and a second receiver and configured to communicate with the first device. The two devices perform a first equalization operation by performing a first phase in which the first receiver performs a signal tuning operation on the second transmitter, a second phase in which the second receiver performs a signal tuning operation on the first transmitter, and one or more other phases. The first, second, and other phases may constitute all the phases of the first equalization operation, and some of the other phases may precede the first and second phases. In response to detection of an error after the first equalization operation, the two devices may perform a second equalization operation by performing the first phase, the second phase, or both, but not performing the other phases.

Claims (31)

1 . A method of operating a system, comprising:

performing, by a first device and a second device, a first equalization operation, the first equalization operation including one or more phases in which the first device and the second device share initial setting values and variables; and

performing, by the first device and the second device, a second equalization operation in response to an error after the first equalization operation, the second equalization operation not including the one or more phases,

wherein the initial setting values and the variables are reused in the second equalization operation.

2 . The method of claim 1 , wherein the initial setting values include an initial transmitter preset and a receiver hint transmitted from the second device to the first device.

3 . The method of claim 1 , wherein the variables include a full swing and a low frequency exchanged between the first device and the second device.

4 . The method of claim 1 , wherein the first equalization operation further comprises a first phase in which a receiver included in the first device performs a signal tuning operation on a transmitter included in the second device and a second phase in which a receiver included in the second device performs a signal tuning operation on a transmitter included in the first device.

5 . The method of claim 1 , wherein, when a receiver included in the first device detects the error after the first equalization operation, the second equalization operation includes a phase in which the receiver performs a signal tuning operation on a transmitter included in the second device.

6 . The method of claim 5 , further comprising:

transmitting, by the first device, phase information indicating the phase to the second device in response to the detection of the error; and

determining, by the second device, to proceed with the phase in the second equalization operation in response to the phase information.

7 . The method of claim 1 , wherein, when a receiver included in the second device detects the error after the first equalization operation, the second equalization operation includes a phase in which the receiver performs a signal tuning operation on a transmitter included in the first device.

8 . The method of claim 7 , further comprising:

transmitting, by the second device, phase information indicating the phase to the first device in response to the detection of the error; and

determining, by the first device, to proceed with the phase in the second equalization operation in response to the phase information.

9 . The method of claim 1 , wherein the first device and the second device proceed with a first recovery process in order to change a communication speed, and the first equalization operation is included in the first recovery process.

10 . A method of operating a system comprising a host device and a data storage device, the host device including a first transmitter and a first receiver, the data storage device including a second transmitter and a second receiver, the method comprising:

performing, by the host device and the data storage device, a first equalization operation, the first equalization operation including: a first phase in which the data storage device transmits initial setting values to the host device, a second phase in which the host device and the data storage device exchange variables, a third phase in which the second receiver performs a signal tuning operation on the first transmitter, and a fourth phase in which the first receiver performs a signal tuning operation on the second transmitter, and

performing, by the host device and the data storage device, a second equalization operation when at least one of the first receiver and the second receiver detects an error after the first equalization operation, the second equalization operation not including the first and second phases.

11 . The method of claim 10 , wherein, when the second receiver detects the error after the first equalization operation, the second equalization operation includes the third phase.

12 . The method of claim 10 , wherein, when the second receiver does not detect the error after the first equalization operation, the second equalization operation does not include the third phase.

13 . The method of claim 10 , wherein, when the first receiver detects the error after the first equalization operation, the second equalization operation includes the fourth phase.

14 . The method of claim 10 , wherein, when the first receiver does not detect the error after the first equalization operation, the second equalization operation does not include the fourth phase.

15 . A system comprising:

a first device; and

a second device configured to communicate with the first device,

wherein the first device and the second device perform a first equalization operation, the first equalization operation including one or more phases in which the first device and the second device share initial setting values and variables,

wherein, when an error occurs after the first equalization operation, the first device and the second device perform a second equalization operation by reusing the initial setting values and the variables shared in the first equalization operation, and

wherein the second equalization operation does not include the one or more phases.

16 . The system of claim 15 , wherein the initial setting values include an initial transmitter preset and a receiver hint transmitted from the second device to the first device.

17 . The system of claim 15 , wherein the variables include a full swing and a low frequency exchanged between the first device and the second device.
