Abstract

Systems and methods for dynamically routing notifications based on device statuses are disclosed herein. For instance, a notification may be generated for a user account corresponding to an application that is installed on a plurality of devices. A system identifies a status of each of the plurality of devices and uses the status of each of the plurality of devices to select a particular device to receive the notification. The system then transmits the notification to the selected particular device.

Claims (48)

1 . A method comprising:

determining, by an application provider, that a digital electronic notification is to be transmitted to at least one device of a plurality of devices associated with a user account of a user;

determining when each device of the plurality of devices was last used to identify a subset of the plurality of devices that were last used within a past time window, wherein the number of devices in the subset is less than the number of devices in the plurality of devices;

retrieving historical notification response data, wherein the historical notification response data indicates, for each respective device of the subset of devices, a number of times that responses from the respective device were the earliest received responses to prior notifications from the application provider;

ranking each device of the subset of devices based on a number of times that a response received from each respective device was earliest to respond to a prior notification from the application provider;

identifying, based at least in part on the ranking, a particular device of the subset of devices having the highest number of times in which responses from the particular device to prior notifications from the application provider were the earliest received responses to notifications among the subset of devices in the historical notification response data;

selecting the particular device of the subset of devices; and

transmitting, by the application provider, the digital electronic notification to the particular device.

2 . The method of claim 1 , wherein the number of responses to notifications from the application provider comprises a number of times a notification from the application provider was selected on the device.

3 . The method of claim 1 , wherein identifying the subset of the plurality of devices further comprises determining devices of the plurality of devices that do not currently have a device setting that negatively affects alerts.

4 . The method of claim 3 , wherein determining devices of the plurality of devices that do not currently have a device setting that negatively affects alerts comprises determining devices that are powered on or devices that have not muted notifications from the application provider.

5 . The method of claim 1 , further comprising:

determining that the particular device has not interacted with the digital electronic notification for at least a threshold period of time;

selecting a different device of the subset of devices, wherein the different device is selected for having the second highest response to notifications among the subset of devices in the historical notification response data; and

transmitting, by the application provider, the digital electronic notification to the different device.

6 . The method of claim 1 , wherein the past time window is specific to one or more of a time of day or a day of the week.

7 . The method of claim 1 , wherein:

the number of responses to notifications from the application provider comprises a number of times user interface inputs interacting with the notifications from the application provider were received from the device; and

having the highest response to notifications comprises having the highest number of times from which the user interface inputs were received.

8 . The method of claim 1 , wherein:

the historical notification response data is for the past time window; and

the particular device is selected based at least in part on the historical notification response data for the past time window.

9 . The method of claim 1 , wherein determining when each device of the plurality of devices was last used to identify the subset of the plurality of devices that were last used within the past time window comprises:

determining when each device of the plurality of devices was last used to respond to a notification from the application provider to identify the subset of the plurality of devices that were last used to respond to a notification from the application provider within the past time window.

10 . The method of claim 1 , further comprising determining an urgency of the digital electronic notification, wherein transmitting the digital electronic notification to the particular device is based at least in part on determining the urgency is not greater than a threshold value.

11 . The method of claim 1 , wherein:

the digital electronic notification comprises an indication of an action to be performed; and

identifying the subset of the plurality of devices further comprises identifying devices of the plurality of devices that are capable of performing the action.

12 . A system comprising:

input/output circuitry configured to transmit a digital electronic notification from an application provider and directed to at least one device of a plurality of devices associated with a user account of a user;

control circuitry configured to:

determine that a digital electronic notification is to be transmitted to at least one device of a plurality of devices associated with a user account of a user;

determine when each device of the plurality of devices was last used to identify a subset of the plurality of devices that were last used within a past time window, wherein the number of devices in the subset is less than the number of devices in the plurality of devices;

retrieve historical notification response data, wherein the historical notification response data indicates, for each respective device of the subset of devices, a number of times that responses from the respective device were the earliest received responses to prior notifications from the application provider;

rank each device of the subset of devices based on a number of times that a response received from each respective device was earliest to response to a prior notification from the application provider;

identify, based at least in part on the ranking, a particular device of the subset of devices having the highest number of times in which responses from the particular device to prior notifications from the application provider were the earliest received responses to notifications among the subset of devices in the historical notification response data;

select the particular device of the subset of devices; and

wherein the input/output circuitry is further configured to transmit the digital electronic notification to the particular device.

13 . The system of claim 12 , wherein the number of responses to notifications from the application provider comprises a number of times a notification from the application provider was selected on the device.

14 . The system of claim 12 , wherein identifying the subset of the plurality of devices further comprises determining devices of the plurality of devices that do not currently have a device setting that negatively affects alerts.

15 . The system of claim 14 , wherein determining devices of the plurality of devices that do not currently have a device setting that negatively affects alerts comprises determining devices that are powered on or devices that have not muted notifications from the application provider.

16 . The system of claim 12 , wherein:

the control circuitry is further configured to:

determine that the particular device has not interacted with the digital electronic notification for at least a threshold period of time; and

select a different device of the subset of devices, wherein the different device is selected for having the second highest response to notifications among the subset of devices in the historical notification response data; and

the input/output circuitry is further configured to:

transmit the digital electronic notification to the different device.

17 . The system of claim 12 , wherein the past time window is specific to one or more of a time of day or a day of the week.
