Discovering and displaying media content related to an electronic document

1 . A method comprising:

at a first computing device having at least one processor and memory storing at least one program for execution by the at least one processor:

opening an electronic document;

obtaining document identifying information for the electronic document;

in response to opening the electronic document and obtaining the document identifying information for the electronic document, identifying at least one media entity associated with the document identifying information, wherein the at least one media entity is stored locally on a second computing device;

displaying, on the first computing device, a representation of at least a subset of the at least one media entity;

obtaining a user selection of a media entity from the representation of at least the subset of the at least one media entity;

in response to the user selection, causing the media entity to be displayed on the second computing device; and

controlling display of the media entity on the second computing device.

2 . The method of claim 1 , wherein the electronic document is opened in a document application on the first computing device.

3 . The method of claim 2 , wherein the document application is a web browser and the electronic document is a web page.

4 . The method of claim 1 , wherein the media entity is a first media entity,

the method further comprising:

obtaining a second media entity related to the media entity; and

displaying, on the first computing device, a representation of the second media entity.

5 . The method of claim 4 , further comprising:

while displaying the representation of the second media entity:

obtaining, at the first computing device, a second user selection, and

sending a command modifying the display of the second media entity in accordance with the second user selection.

6 . The method of claim 1 , further comprising:

sending a request to a server for a plurality of media entities associated with the electronic document, the request including the document identifying information;

receiving the plurality of media entities from the server; and

displaying, on the first computing device, a second representation of the plurality of media entities from the server.

7 . The method of claim 1 , wherein the at least one program includes a browser plug-in that performs the method.

8 . The method of claim 1 , wherein the at least one media entity is identified based at least in part on one or more filtering criteria.

9 . A client system, comprising:

at least one processor;

memory; and

at least one program, wherein the at least one program is stored in the memory and configured to be executed by the at least one processor, the at least one program including instructions to perform a method comprising:

opening an electronic document;

obtaining document identifying information for the electronic document;

in response to opening the electronic document and obtaining the document identifying information for the electronic document, identifying a media entity associated with the document identifying information, wherein the media entity is stored locally on a second computing device;

displaying, on a first computing device, a representation of the media entity;

obtaining a user selection from the representation of the media entity from the at least the subset of the media entity;

in response to the user selection, causing the media entity to be displayed on a second computing device; and

controlling, at the first computing device, display of the media entity on the second computing device.

10 . The client system of claim 9 , wherein the electronic document is opened in a document application on the first computing device.

11 . The client system of claim 10 , wherein the document application is a web browser and the electronic document is a web page.

12 . The client system of claim 9 , wherein the media entity is a first media entity,

the method further comprising:

obtaining a second media entity related to the media entity; and

displaying, on the first computing device, a representation of the second media entity.

13 . The client system of claim 12 , wherein the method further comprising:

while displaying the representation of the second media entity:

obtaining, at the first computing device, a second user selection, and

sending a command modifying the display of the second media entity in accordance with the second user selection.

14 . The client system of claim 9 , wherein the method further comprising:

sending a request to a server for media entities associated with the electronic document, the request including the document identifying information;

receiving the media entities from the server; and

displaying, on the first computing device, a second representation of the media entities from the server.

15 . A non-transitory computer readable storage medium storing at least one program, the at least one program comprising instructions, which when executed by a computer system with at least one processor, cause the computer system to perform a method comprising, at a first computing device:

opening an electronic document;

obtaining document identifying information for the electronic document;

in response to opening the electronic document and obtaining the document identifying information for the electronic document, identifying at least one media entity associated with the document identifying information, wherein the at least one media entity is stored locally on a second computing device;

displaying, on the first computing device, a representation of at least a subset of the at least one media entity;

obtaining a user selection of a media entity from the representation of at least the subset of the at least one media entity;

in response to the user selection, causing the media entity to be displayed on the second computing device; and

controlling, at the first computing device, display of the media entity on the second computing device.

16 . The non-transitory computer readable storage medium of claim 15 , wherein the electronic document opened in a document application on the first computing device.

17 . The non-transitory computer readable storage medium of claim 16 , wherein the document application is a web browser and the electronic document is a web page.

18 . The non-transitory computer readable storage medium of claim 15 , wherein the media entity is a first media entity,

the method further comprising:

obtaining a second media entity related to the media entity; and

displaying, on the first computing device, a representation of the second media entity.

19 . The non-transitory computer readable storage medium of claim 18 , the method further comprising:

while displaying the representation of the second media entity:

obtaining, at the first computing device, a second user selection, and

sending a command modifying the display of the second media entity in accordance with the second user selection.

20 . The non-transitory computer readable storage medium of claim 15 , wherein obtaining the media entity associated with the electronic document includes:

sending a request to a server for a plurality of media entities associated with the electronic document, the request including the document identifying information; and

receiving the plurality of media entities from the server; and

displaying, on the first computing device, a second representation of the plurality of media entities from the server.
