Abstract

In one embodiment, a method is disclosed for providing paging optimization using Radio Access Network (RAN) Intelligent Controller (RIC)/OpenRAN (ORAN) in 5G and 4G Systems. The method comprising the RIC using a user equipment (UE) context which is updated on UE movement and calculates the UEs current location. Using this paging is sent in stages where in the first stage paging will be sent to most probable ORAN centralized unit (O-CU)/ORAN distributed unit (O-DU)/ORAN evolved NodeB (O-eNB) that will be having higher possibility of paging to succeed and avoid broadcasting to entire Tracking area(s).

whenever received from Access and Mobility Management Function (AMF)/Mobility Management Entity (MME),

wherein the connected O-CUs/O-eNBs buffer a paging message, start a timer and forward the paging message to the RIC;

performing, by the RIC, an System Architecture Evolution (SAE) Temporary Mobile Subscriber Identity (STMSI) lookup and when the RIC finds the mobility context, identifying one or more target O-CUs/target O-eNBs and sending corresponding distributed units (DUs)/sectors where paging needs to be sent based on a calculated UE location, wherein the one or more target

O-CUs/O-eNBs send stage 1 paging to corresponding DUs/sectors and one of the target

O-CUs/O-eNBs indicates to the RIC about successful paging and deletes buffered paging; and

notifying, by the RIC upon receiving the indication, other O-CUs/O-eNBs for paging cancellation so that the other O-CUs/O-eNBs discard a buffered paging message;

wherein the other O-CUs/O-eNBs continue with normal paging when no paging cancellation is received from the RIC.

2 . The method of claim 1 , wherein when no paging cancellation is received from the RIC includes when no paging cancellation is received from the RIC by expiry of the timer.

3 . The method of claim 1 , wherein broadcasting of the paging message to an entire tracking area is avoided.

4 . The method of claim 3 , wherein broadcasting the paging message to all O-DUs/O-eNBs in the entire tracking area is avoided.

5 . The method of claim 1 , wherein based on the mobility context, paging sent to the one or more target O-CUs/target O-eNBs has a higher possibility to succeed than paging sent to the other O-CUs/O-eNBs.

6 . The method of claim 1 , wherein updating the mobility context based on a UEs mobility information received includes updating the mobility context based on every UE movement.

7 . The method of claim 1 , wherein notifying, by the RIC upon receiving the indication, other O-CUs/O-eNBs for paging cancellation includes sending by the RIC a paging cancellation to the other O-CUs/O-eNBs.

8 . A non-transitory computer-readable medium comprising instructions for providing paging optimization using Radio Access Network (RAN) Intelligent Controller (RIC)/OpenRAN (ORAN) in 5G and 4G Systems which, when executed, cause a system to perform steps, comprising:

creating, by the RIC, a mobility context and updating the mobility context based on a UEs mobility information received from one or more centralized units (CUs) or evolved NodeBs (eNBs);

pushing, by the RIC, a policy to connected OpenRAN centralized units (O-CUs)/(OpenRAN evolved NodeBs (O-eNBs) to forward paging

whenever received from Access and Mobility Management Function (AMF)/Mobility Management Entity (MME), wherein the connected O-CUs/O-eNBs buffer a paging message, start a timer and forward the paging message to the RIC;

performing, by the RIC, an System Architecture Evolution (SAE) Temporary Mobile Subscriber Identity (STMSI) lookup and when the RIC finds the mobility context, identifying one or more target O-CUs/target O-eNBs and sending corresponding distributed units (DUs)/sectors where paging needs to be sent based on a calculated UE location, wherein the one or more target O-CUs/O-eNBs send stage 1 paging to corresponding DUs/sectors and one of the target O-CUs/O-eNBs indicates to the RIC about successful paging and deletes buffered paging; and

notifying, by the RIC upon receiving the indication, other O-CUs/O-eNBs for paging cancellation so that the other O-CUs/O-eNBs discard a buffered paging message;

wherein the other O-CUs/O-eNBs continue with normal paging when no paging cancellation is received from the RIC.

9 . The computer-readable medium of claim 8 , wherein when no paging cancellation is received from the RIC includes when no paging cancellation is received from the RIC by expiry of the timer.

10 . The computer-readable medium of claim 8 , wherein broadcasting of the paging message to an entire tracking area is avoided.
