Abstract

A method for making C 7 -C 12 aromatic compounds includes reacting a mixture comprising C 2 -C 5 olefins and C 1 -C 4 paraffins under conditions sufficient to form a reaction product mixture comprising a liquid phase and a gas phase, wherein the liquid phase comprises the C 7 -C 12 aromatic hydrocarbons and wherein the gas phase comprises hydrogen and C 1 -C 4 paraffins. The liquid phase is then separated from the gas phase.

Claims (25)

1 . A method for making C 7 -C 12 aromatic compounds, comprising:

reacting a mixture comprising C 2 -C 5 olefins and C 1 -C 4 paraffins to form a reaction product mixture comprising a liquid phase and a gas phase, wherein the liquid phase comprises the C 7 -C 12 aromatic hydrocarbons and wherein the gas phase comprises hydrogen and C 1 -C 4 paraffins; and

separating the liquid phase from the gas phase.

2 . The method of claim 1 , wherein the reaction product mixture is formed at a temperature of 350 to 450° C.

3 . The method of claim 1 , wherein the reaction product mixture is formed at a pressure of 0.5 to 2.0 MPa.

4 . The method of claim 1 , wherein the mixture is reacted in a continuous-flow reactor.

5 . The method of claim 1 , wherein the reaction product mixture is formed in the presence of a heterogeneous zeolite-containing catalyst.

6 . The method of claim 5 , wherein the heterogeneous zeolite-containing catalyst comprises at least 93% ZSM-5 modified by 3.5 to 7.0% Zn.

7 . The method of claim 1 , further comprising:

separating C 7 -C 12 aromatic hydrocarbons into a first fraction comprising C 7 -C 8 aromatic hydrocarbons and a second fraction comprising C 9 -C 12 aromatic hydrocarbons.

8 . The method of claim 7 , further comprising:

producing gasoline from the C 7 -C 8 aromatic hydrocarbons.

9 . The method of claim 7 , further comprising:

producing kerosene from the C 9 -C 12 aromatic hydrocarbons.

10 . The method of claim 1 , further comprising:

reacting at least a portion of the hydrogen and at least a portion of the C 1 -C 4 paraffins with carbon dioxide to produce a synthesis gas.

11 . The method of claim 10 , further comprising:

employing at least a portion of the synthesis gas in a hydroformylation reaction.

12 . The method of claim 11 , wherein the hydroformylation reaction comprises reacting the synthesis gas, ethylene, propylene, and acetaldehyde to form a mixture of C 3 -C 4 aldehydes and C 5 -C 8 aldols.

13 . The method of claim 12 , further comprising:

hydrogenating the mixture comprising C 3 -C 4 aldehydes and C 5 -C 8 aldols to obtain a mixture comprising C 3 -C 8 alcohols.

14 . The method of claim 13 , further comprising:

converting the C 3 -C 8 alcohols into C 6 -C 24 paraffins.

15 . The method of claim 13 , further comprising:

isolating a fraction of the C 6 -C 24 paraffins and using the isolated fraction to formulate a motor fuel.
