Expandable pipe stopper
A pipe stopper includes an expandable stopper body configurable in an expanded configuration and a contracted configuration, the expandable stopper body comprising a shell defining a stopper cavity and further defining an opening providing fluid communication to the stopper cavity through the shell; a pressure assembly received in the stopper cavity and defining a housing cavity; and a valve stem defining a stem fluid pathway, the valve stem movable between an open position and a closed position.
1 . A pipe stopper comprising:
an expandable stopper body defining a stopper axis and configurable in an expanded configuration and a contracted configuration, the expandable stopper body comprising a shell defining a stopper cavity and further defining an opening providing fluid communication to the stopper cavity through the shell;
a pressure assembly received in the stopper cavity and defining a housing cavity;
a valve stem defining a stem fluid pathway, the valve stem movable between an open position and a closed position; and
an actuation arm comprising a distal arm end connected to the shell and a proximal arm end connected to the pressure assembly,
wherein the proximal arm end is movable radially with respect to the stopper axis.
2 . The pipe stopper of claim 1 , wherein the shell is substantially cylindrical.
3 . The pipe stopper of claim 2 , wherein the shell defines an upper shell end and a lower shell end opposite the upper shell end, and wherein the opening is a longitudinal shell slot extending from the upper shell end to the lower shell end.
4 . The pipe stopper of claim 2 , wherein the shell comprises a bendable arcuate shell body.
5 . The pipe stopper of claim 4 , wherein the bendable arcuate shell body comprises an elastic region for bending the bending arcuate shell body from the contracted configuration to the expanded configuration.
6 . The pipe stopper of claim 5 , wherein the bendable arcuate shell body is naturally biased radially inward to the contracted configuration.
7 . The pipe stopper of claim 6 , wherein a diameter of the bendable arcuate shell body in the expanded configuration is greater than the diameter of the bendable arcuate shell body in the contracted configuration.

The pipe stopper of claim 4 , wherein, in the open position, the stem fluid pathway is in fluid communication with the housing cavity and the expandable stopper body is biased towards the expanded configuration, and in the closed position, the stem fluid pathway is not in fluid communication with the housing cavity and the expandable stopper body is biased towards the contracted configuration.
9 . The pipe stopper of claim 8 , wherein the pressure assembly comprises a pressure housing and a piston, the piston slidably engaged with the housing cavity of the pressure housing, the piston operatively connected to the expandable stopper body.
10 . The pipe stopper of claim 4 , wherein the distal arm end is pivotably connected to the shell and the proximal arm end is pivotably connected to the pressure assembly, the actuation arm configured to move the expandable stopper body between the expanded configuration and the contracted configuration.
11 . The pipe stopper of claim 1 , wherein the shell comprises a metal material.
12 . The pipe stopper of claim 11 , wherein the metal material comprises steel.
13 . The pipe stopper of claim 11 , wherein a resilient sealing layer is applied to an outer surface of the shell.
14 . The pipe stopper of claim 13 , wherein the sealing layer comprises urethane.
15 . A pipe stopper comprising:
an expandable stopper body configurable in an expanded configuration and a contracted configuration, the expandable stopper body comprising a shell defining a stopper cavity and further defining an opening providing fluid communication to the stopper cavity through the shell;
a pressure assembly received in the stopper cavity and defining a housing cavity; and
a valve stem defining a stem fluid pathway, the valve stem movable between an open position and a closed position;
wherein:
the shell is substantially cylindrical;
the shell comprises a bendable arcuate shell body; and
in the open position, the stem fluid pathway is in fluid communication with the housing cavity and the expandable stopper body is biased towards the expanded configuration, and in the closed position, the stem fluid pathway is not in fluid communication with the housing cavity and the expandable stopper body is biased towards the contracted configuration.
16 . The pipe stopper of claim 15 , wherein the pressure assembly comprises a pressure housing and a piston, the piston slidably engaged with the housing cavity of the pressure housing, the piston operatively connected to the expandable stopper body.
