Performance-based promotion of replication targets
A method of managing host mappings for replication endpoints, the method including: identifying a target storage system replicating a source dataset of a source storage system, wherein a first host is mapped to the source dataset on the source storage system; providing, to the target storage system and in dependence upon a mapping of the first host to the source dataset, configuration information for connecting to a second host; and implementing, in response to a triggering event, a mapping of the second host to a replica dataset on the target storage system.
1 . A method comprising:
identifying that a target storage system is replicating a source volume of a source storage system, wherein a host computing device that issues input and output (“I/O”) operations directed to a dataset at the source storage system is mapped to the source volume; and
promoting, based on a change in performance at the source storage system, a tracking volume at the target storage system for servicing I/O operations directed to a replica dataset at the target storage system, wherein promoting the tracking volume comprises replaying one or more lightweight checkpoints to generate an updated copy of the dataset at the target storage system by converting metadata log information into regular formatted metadata and mapping a second host computing device to the replica dataset at the target storage system.
2 . The method of claim 1 , further comprising promoting the tracking volume based on a triggering event, wherein the triggering event is a cloning event.
3 . The method of claim 1 , wherein the second host computing device is launched in response to a triggering event.
4 . The method of claim 3 , wherein the second host computing device is instantiated as a host virtual machine.
5 . The method of claim 3 , wherein the second host computing device is deployed as a containerized host.
6 . The method of claim 3 , wherein the second host computing device is selected based on a particular type of triggering event.
7 . The method of claim 3 further comprising providing, to the second host computing device, storage profile information for the replica dataset.
8 . The method of claim 1 , wherein the second host computing device is launched in a virtualized environment.
9 . An apparatus comprising:
a memory;
a processing device operably coupled to the memory, configured to:
identifying that a target storage system is replicating a source volume of a source storage system, wherein a host computing device that issues input and output (“I/O”) operations directed to a dataset at the source storage system is mapped to the source volume; and
promoting, based on a change in performance at the source storage system, a tracking volume at the target storage system for servicing I/O operations directed to a replica dataset at the target storage system, wherein promoting the tracking volume comprises replaying one or more lightweight checkpoints to generate an updated copy of the dataset at the target storage system by converting metadata log information into regular formatted metadata and mapping a second host computing device to the replica dataset at the target storage system.

11 . The apparatus of claim 9 , wherein the second host computing device is selected based on a particular type of triggering event.
12 . The apparatus of claim 9 , wherein the processing device is further configured to:
provide, to the second host computing device, storage profile information for the replica dataset.
13 . The apparatus of claim 9 , wherein the processing device is further configured to:
promoting the tracking volume based on a triggering event, wherein the triggering event is a cloning event.

15 . The apparatus of claim 9 , wherein the second host computing device is instantiated as a host virtual machine.
16 . The apparatus of claim 9 , wherein the second host computing device is deployed as a containerized host.
17 . A method comprising:
receiving an indication that a first host computing device that issues input and output (“I/O”) operations to a source volume and is mapped to a source volume at a replication source is equivalent to a second host computing device computing device that can issue I/O operations to a replica volume at a replication target of the source volume; and
promoting, based on a change in performance at the replication source, a tracking volume at the replication target for servicing I/O operations directed to a replica dataset at the replication target, wherein promoting the tracking volume comprises replaying one or more lightweight checkpoints to generate an updated copy of the dataset at a target storage system by converting metadata log information into regular formatted metadata and mapping a second host computing device to a replica dataset at the target storage system.
18 . The method of claim 17 , further comprising promoting the tracking volume in response to a triggering event.
19 . The method of claim 18 , wherein the triggering event is a cloning event.
20 . The method of claim 17 , wherein a replica link specifies a continuous replication policy between the replication source for the source volume and the replication target for the replica volume of the source dataset.
