Cloud-based replication to cloud-external systems
Replicating data to the cloud includes a first dataset that is replicated from a first storage subsystem to the cloud, with only the changes made to the first dataset since a previous replication event being replicated to the cloud. Additionally, the data may be deduplicated and compressed before being replicated from the first storage subsystem to the cloud. In some cases, the first dataset may be replicated to the cloud in a stream format which is not directly usable and then, at a later point in time, loaded onto a second storage subsystem from the cloud.
1 . A method comprising:
receiving, by a processor, a request to replicate a copy of a dataset from a first storage system of one or more storage systems that are external to a cloud environment, wherein the request comprises information relating to one or more transactions previously applied to the dataset;
identifying, by the processor, a second storage system from the one or more storage systems that are external to the cloud environment using information describing one or more states of the one or more storage systems;
restoring, to the second storage system, the dataset that was received from the first storage system; and
receiving one or more snapshots of the dataset, wherein the one or more snapshots of the dataset are encrypted.
2 . The method of claim 1 , wherein the request identifies the second storage system and wherein identifying the second storage system is based on the request.
3 . The method of claim 1 , further comprising: replicating a copy of the dataset to the second storage system in a same format as the dataset received from the first storage system.
4 . The method of claim 1 , wherein the one or more snapshots of the dataset include deduplicated data.
5 . The method of claim 4 , further comprising:
compressing the deduplicated data.
6 . The method of claim 1 , further comprising:
receiving, from each of the one or more storage systems, information describing a state of the storage system, wherein identifying the second storage system is carried out in dependence upon the information describing the state of each storage system.
7 . The method of claim 1 , further comprising:
detecting that the second storage system is available to receive data.
8 . A non-transitory computer readable storage medium storing instructions, which when executed, cause a processor to:
receive a request to replicate a copy of a dataset from a first storage system of one or more storage systems that are external to a cloud environment, wherein the request comprises information relating to one or more transactions previously applied to the dataset;
identify, by the processor, a second storage system from one or more storage systems that are external to the cloud environment using information describing one or more states of the one or more storage systems;
restore, to the second storage system, the dataset that was received from the first storage system; and
receive one or more snapshots of the dataset, wherein the one or more snapshots of the dataset are encrypted.

detect that the second storage system is available to receive data.
15 . A system comprising:
a memory storing program instructions; and
a processor operatively coupled to the memory, configured to execute the program instructions to:
receive a request to replicate a copy of a dataset from a first storage system of one or more storage systems that are external to a cloud environment, wherein the request comprises information relating to one or more transactions previously applied to the dataset;
identify, by the processor, a second storage system from one or more storage systems that are external to the cloud environment using information describing one or more states of the one or more storage systems;
