Abstract

A method includes tuning an end user device to a first media station in response to first tuning input received at the end user device, extracting, at the end user device, a station identifier from content obtained from the first media station, and obtaining access information associated with a second media station based on the station identifier of the first media station. In response to second tuning input requesting the end user device to tune to the first media station, instead of tuning to the first media station, retrieving the second media station based on the access information.

Claims (57)

1 . A method comprising:

tuning an end user device to a first media station in response to first tuning input received at the end user device;

extracting, at the end user device, a station identifier from content obtained from the first media station;

obtaining access information associated with a second media station based on the station identifier of the first media station; and

in response to second tuning input requesting the end user device to tune to the first media station, instead of tuning to the first media station, retrieving the second media station based on the access information.

2 . The method of claim 1 , further comprising:

determining, based on the station identifier, whether the first media station is included in a predetermined group of media stations.

3 . The method of claim 2 , wherein determining whether the first media station is included in a predetermined group of media stations includes:

transmitting the station identifier to a web-service.

4 . The method of claim 2 , further comprising:

in response to determining that the first media station is included in the predetermined group of media stations, obtaining the access information at the end user device via a packet switched network; and

storing the access information local to the end user device.

5 . The method of claim 4 , further comprising:

retrieving the second media station based on the access information stored local to the end user device.

6 . The method of claim 1 , wherein:

the first media station is an over-the-air radio station; and

the second media station is a streaming station.

7 . The method of claim 6 , wherein retrieving the second media station based on the access information includes:

selecting the second media station based, at least in part, on a degree of correspondence between the over-the-air radio station and the streaming station.

8 . An end user device comprising:

a processor;

memory coupled to the processor and storing a program of instructions, the processor configured to execute the program of instructions to cause the end user device to:

tune the end user device to a first media station in response to first tuning input;

extract a station identifier from content obtained from the first media station;

obtain access information associated with a second media station based on the station identifier of the first media station; and

request the end user device to use the access information to retrieve the second media station, instead of tuning to the first media station the first media station, in response to second tuning input.

9 . The end user device of claim 8 , wherein the processor is configured to execute the program of instructions to cause the end user device to:

determine, based on the station identifier, whether the first media station is included in a predetermined group of media stations.

10 . The end user device of claim 9 , wherein the processor is configured to execute the program of instructions to cause the end user device to:

determine whether the first media station is included in a predetermined group of media stations by transmitting the station identifier to a web-service.

11 . The end user device of claim 9 , wherein the processor is configured to execute the program of instructions to cause the end user device to:

obtain the access information via a packet switched network, in response to determining that the first media station is included in the predetermined group of media stations; and

store the access information local to the end user device.

12 . The end user device of claim 11 , wherein the processor is configured to execute the program of instructions to cause the end user device to:

retrieve the second media station based on the access information stored local to the end user device.

13 . The end user device of claim 8 , wherein:

the first media station is an over-the-air radio station; and

the second media station is a streaming station.

14 . The end user device of claim 13 , wherein the processor is configured to execute the program of instructions to cause the end user device to:

select the second media station based, at least in part, on a degree of correspondence between the over-the-air radio station and the streaming station.

15 . A non-transitory computer readable medium tangibly embodying a program of instructions configured to be stored in a memory and executed by a processor, the program of instructions comprising:

at least one instruction to tune an end user device to a first media station in response to first tuning input;

at least one instruction to extract a station identifier from content obtained from the first media station;

at least one instruction to obtain access information associated with a second media station based on the station identifier of the first media station; and

at least one instruction to request the end user device to use the access information to retrieve the second media station, instead of tuning to the first media station the first media station, in response to second tuning input.

16 . The non-transitory computer readable medium of claim 15 , wherein the program of instructions further includes:

at least one instruction to determine, based on the station identifier, whether the first media station is included in a predetermined group of media stations.

17 . The non-transitory computer readable medium of claim 16 , wherein the program of instructions further includes:

at least one instruction to determine whether the first media station is included in a predetermined group of media stations by transmitting the station identifier to a web-service.

18 . The non-transitory computer readable medium of claim 16 , wherein the program of instructions further includes:

at least one instruction to obtain the access information via a packet switched network, in response to determining that the first media station is included in the predetermined group of media stations; and

at least one instruction to store the access information local to the end user device.

19 . The non-transitory computer readable medium of claim 18 , wherein the program of instructions further includes:

at least one instruction to retrieve the second media station based on the access information stored local to the end user device.

20 . The non-transitory computer readable medium of claim 15 , wherein:

the first media station is an over-the-air radio station and the second media station is a streaming station; and

the program of instructions further includes at least one instruction to select the second media station based, at least in part, on a degree of correspondence between the over-the-air radio station and the streaming station.
