Abstract

Clavicle fixation devices and methods thereof. A clavicle fixation device includes an elongated plate extending between first and second ends, the elongated plate defining a plurality of spaced apart screw holes. At least one pair of relief cuts extends into the elongated plate on opposite sides thereof, the at least one pair of relief cuts axially positioned between a pair of the spaced apart screw holes and at least one pair of suture holes along opposite sides of the elongated plate, the at least one pair of suture holes axially positioned between a pair of the spaced apart screw holes. At least one pair of relief cuts is axially aligned with a pair of suture holes to define combined holes on opposite sides of the elongated plate.

Claims (51)

1 . A clavicle fixation device comprising:

an elongated plate extending between first and second ends, the elongated plate including a plurality of spart apart screw holes, and

an extension extending from the first end of the elongated plate, a descending arm extending inferiorly from the extension, and a lateral arm angling laterally from the descending arm,

wherein the lateral arm fans out into a widened head having a curved spatula shape or curved spoon shape.

2 . A method of stabilizing bone comprising:

providing a clavicle fixation device including:

an elongated plate extending between first and second ends, the elongated plate including a plurality of spaced apart screw holes, and

an extension extending from the first end of the elongated plate, a descending arm extending inferiorly from the extension to a given depth, and a lateral arm angling laterally from the descending arm,

wherein the lateral arm fans out into a widened head having a curved spatula shape or curved spoon shape; and

positioning the clavicle fixation device on bone.

3 . The method of claim 2 , wherein the elongated plate includes:

a plurality of suture holes along opposed sides of the elongated plate; and

a plurality of undercuts disposed on an inner surface of the elongated plate, each undercut being aligned with a corresponding suture hole to allow free passage of a suture underneath the elongated plate without interference at a plate/bone interface.

4 . The method of claim 3 , wherein each undercut has a width larger than a width of the corresponding suture hole.

5 . The method of claim 2 , wherein the elongated plate includes:

a plurality of suture holes along opposed sides of the elongated plate;

a plurality of relief cuts disposed along opposed sidewalls of the elongated plate, each relief cut being aligned with a corresponding suture hole to allow preferential bending between the screw holes.

6 . The method of claim 2 , wherein the elongated plate includes:

a plurality of suture holes along opposed sides of the elongated plate;

a plurality of relief cuts disposed along opposed sidewalls of the elongated plate, each relief cut being aligned with a corresponding suture hole to allow preferential bending between the screw holes; and

a plurality of undercuts disposed on an inner surface of the elongated plate, each undercut being aligned with a corresponding suture hole to allow free passage of a suture underneath the elongated plate without interference at a plate/bone interface, each undercut disposed under a corresponding one of the relief cuts.

7 . The method of claim 2 , wherein:

the elongated plate defines a longitudinal axis;

an underside of the elongated plate includes first and second concave surfaces disposed on opposite sides of the longitudinal axis.

8 . The method of claim 2 , wherein:

the elongated plate defines a longitudinal axis;

an underside of the elongated plate includes:

a central concave surface having a central radius;

a first concave surface disposed on one side of the central concave surface, the first concave surface having a first radius which is smaller than the central radius.

9 . The method of claim 8 , wherein the underside of the elongated plate further includes a second concave surface disposed on a second side of the central concave surface, the second concave surface having a second radius equal to the first radius.

10 . The method of claim 2 , wherein the screw holes include polyaxial holes and dynamic compression plating slots arranged on a central longitudinal axis.

11 . The method of claim 2 , wherein the elongated plate includes a lateral extension disposed at the first end and including a plurality of polyaxial holes.

12 . The method of claim 11 , wherein the plurality of polyaxial holes in the lateral extension have central axes extending in divergent directions.

13 . The method of claim 2 further comprising a sliding slot screw having a shank with a first diameter and a head with a second diameter, and wherein the elongated plate includes a sliding slot having a width which is larger than the first diameter and smaller than the second diameter.

14 . A method of stabilizing bone comprising:

providing a clavicle fixation device including:

an elongated plate extending between first and second ends and defining a longitudinal axis, the elongated plate including:

a plurality of spaced apart screw holes disposed along the longitudinal axis;

a plurality of suture holes along opposed sides of the elongated plate; and

a plurality of undercuts disposed on an inner surface of the elongated plate, each undercut being aligned with a corresponding suture hole to allow free passage of a suture underneath the elongated plate without interference of a plate/bone interface;

an extension extending from the first end of the elongated plate, a descending arm extending inferiorly from the extension to a given depth, and lateral arm angling laterally from the descending arm,

wherein the lateral arm fans out into a widened head having a curved spatula shape or curved spoon shape; and

positioning the clavicle fixation device on bone.

15 . The method of claim 14 , wherein the elongated plate includes:

a plurality of relief cuts disposed along opposed sidewalls of the elongated plate, each relief cut being aligned with a corresponding suture hole to allow preferential bending between the screw holes.

16 . The method of claim 15 , wherein each undercut is disposed under a corresponding one of the relief cuts.

17 . The method of claim 14 , wherein:

an underside of the elongated plate includes:

a central concave surface having a central radius;

a first concave surface disposed on one side of the central concave surface, the first concave surface having a first radius which is smaller than the central radius.

18 . The method of claim 17 , wherein the underside of the elongated plate further includes a second concave surface disposed on a second side of the central concave surface, the second concave surface having a second radius equal to the first radius.
