Abstract

A method for adjusting the operation of a surgical instrument using machine learning in a surgical suite is disclosed. The method comprises the steps of gathering data during surgical procedures, wherein the surgical procedures include the use of a surgical instrument, analyzing the gathered data to determine an appropriate operational adjustment of the surgical instrument, and adjusting the operation of the surgical instrument to improve the operation of the surgical instrument.

Claims (22)

1 . A method for adjusting an operation of a surgical instrument using machine learning in a surgical suite, wherein the method comprises:

analyzing data from two independently operable computer-implemented interactive surgical systems to determine an appropriate operational adjustment of the surgical instrument;

implementing an automatic adjustment of the operation of the surgical instrument based on the analyzed data to improve the operation of the surgical instrument; and

implementing a manual override over the automatic adjustment of the operation of the surgical instrument based on a feedback from one or more of the two computer-implemented interactive surgical systems.

2 . The method of claim 1 , wherein the surgical instrument is attached to a surgical robot and is configured to be operated manually by a clinician.

3 . The method of claim 1 , further comprising gathering the data during surgical procedures with the two independently operable computer-implemented interactive surgical systems, wherein the surgical procedures include use of jaws configured to be mechanically advanced through a closing stroke, the jaws forming part of at least one of the two independently operable computer-implemented interactive surgical systems.

4 . The method of claim 1 , wherein the manual override is selectively activatable by a user.

5 . The method of claim 1 , wherein the manual override modifies the automatic adjustment.

6 . The method of claim 1 , wherein the feedback comprises operational data from at least one of the two computer-implemented interactive surgical systems during implementation of the automatic adjustment.

7 . A method for adjusting an operation of a surgical instrument, wherein the method comprises:

gathering data during surgical procedures from two independently operable surgical systems, and thereby obtaining gathered data;

analyzing the gathered data and thereby obtaining analyzed gathered data;

automatically adjusting a parameter of the surgical instrument based on the analyzed gathered data to improve the operation of the surgical instrument; and

manually overriding the automatic adjustment of the parameter.

8 . The method of claim 7 , wherein the surgical instrument is attached to a surgical robot and is configured to be operated manually by a clinician.

9 . A method for adjusting an operation of a surgical instrument, wherein the method comprises:

using two independently operable computer-implemented interactive surgical systems

to gather data during surgical procedures for the surgical instrument;

analyzing the gathered data with machine learning to determine an operational adjustment of the surgical instrument;

implementing an automatic adjustment of the operation of the surgical instrument based on the analyzed gathered data to improve the operation of the surgical instrument; and

manually overriding the automatic adjustment based on a feedback from one or both of the two computer-implemented interactive surgical systems.

10 . The method of claim 9 , wherein the surgical instrument is attached to a surgical robot and is configured to be operated manually by a clinician.
