Apparatus and method for positioning a patient
A patient positioning system includes an inflatable patient support device having a width, and a positioning apparatus. The positioning apparatus including a wedge-shaped body, the wedge-shaped body configured to be placed under the inflatable patient support device to support a patient in a desired position, and a tail comprising an elongated piece of material extending from a front end of the wedge-shaped body, wherein a length of the tail is greater than the width of the inflatable patient support device.
1 . A patient positioning system comprising:
an inflatable patient support device having a width in a direction, the inflatable patient support device comprising:
a first port at a first corner of the inflatable patient support device, the first port configured to couple to an air output to inflate the inflatable patient support device, and
a second port at a second corner of the inflatable patient support device, the second port configured to couple to the air output to inflate the inflatable patient support device; and
a positioning apparatus including:
a wedge-shaped body comprising a front end and a back wall opposite the front end, the wedge-shaped body configured to be placed under the support device to support a patient in a desired position, and
a tail comprising an elongated piece of material extending from the front end of the wedge-shaped body, a length of the tail in the direction being greater than the width of the inflatable patient support device.
2 . The patient positioning system of claim 1 , wherein the wedge-shaped body further comprises a base wall and a ramp surface and a side wall, the ramp surface opposite the base wall.
3 . The patient positioning system of claim 1 , wherein the tail is configured to slide between a bottom surface of the support device and a support surface to position the wedge-shaped body relative to the patient to support the patient in the desired position.
4 . A patient positioning system comprising:
an inflatable patient support device, the inflatable patient support device comprising:
a first port at a first corner of the inflatable patient support device, the first port configured to couple to an air output to inflate the inflatable patient support device, and
a second port at a second corner of the inflatable patient support device, the second port configured to couple to the air output to inflate the inflatable patient support device; and
a positioning apparatus including:
a wedge-shaped body comprising a front end and a back wall opposite the front end, the wedge-shaped body configured to be placed under the support device to support a patient in a desired position, and
a tail comprising an elongated piece of material extending from the front end of the wedge-shaped body, the tail coupled to the wedge-shaped body using at least one of an adhesive or stitching.
5 . The patient positioning system of claim 1 , wherein the tail is coupled to the wedge-shaped body along an entire width of the wedge-shaped body, and the width of the wedge-shaped body is substantially equal to an entire width of the tail.
6 . The patient positioning system of claim 1 , wherein:
a distance between the front end of the wedge-shaped body and an end of the tail opposite the wedge-shaped body defines the length of the tail; and
the tail is between 0.5 meters and 3 meters in length.
7 . The patient positioning system of claim 1 , wherein a portion of the tail is configured to bundle to limit overhang of the tail from a support surface.

The patient positioning system of claim 1 , wherein the positioning apparatus further comprises an engagement member configured to engage with a surface of at least one of the support device and a support surface to resist slipping of the positioning apparatus relative to the at least one of the support device and the support surface.
9 . The patient positioning system of claim 8 , wherein the engagement member is located on a ramp surface of the wedge-shaped body and configured to engage with the support device.
10 . The patient positioning system of claim 8 , wherein the engagement member is located on a base wall of the wedge-shaped body and configured to engage with the support surface.
11 . The patient positioning system of claim 1 , wherein the inflatable patient support device comprises:
a top sheet; and
a bottom sheet coupled to the bottom sheet to define a cavity configured to be inflated, wherein the top sheet forms a top wall of the cavity, and the bottom sheet forms a bottom wall of the cavity.
12 . The patient positioning system of claim 11 , wherein the first port and the second port provide fluid communication between the cavity and an exterior environment, the first port and the second port configured for connection to the air output for inflation of the cavity.
13 . The patient positioning system of claim 11 , wherein the inflatable patient support device further comprises a plurality of inflation-limiting structures connecting the top sheet to the bottom sheet, wherein each of the inflation-limiting structures is circular.
14 . The patient positioning system of claim 11 , wherein the inflatable patient support device further comprises:
a first inflation-limiting structure connecting the top sheet to the bottom sheet, the first inflation-limiting structure being circular;
a second inflation-limiting structure connecting the top sheet to the bottom sheet, the second inflation-limiting structure being circular;
a third inflation-limiting structure connecting the top sheet to the bottom sheet, the third inflation-limiting structure being circular; and
a plurality of perforations located in a region between the first inflation-limiting structure, the second inflation-limiting structure, and the third inflation-limiting structure, the perforations configured to permit air to pass from the cavity to an exterior of the inflatable patient support device.
15 . The patient positioning system of claim 11 , wherein:
the inflatable patient support device further comprises a plurality of inflation-limiting structures connecting the top sheet to the bottom sheet; and
there is a higher density of the inflation-limiting structures near the first corner and the second corner than at a third corner of the inflatable patient support device or a fourth corner of the inflatable patient support device.
16 . The patient positioning system of claim 11 , wherein:
the inflatable patient support device further comprises a plurality of inflation-limiting structures connecting the top sheet to the bottom sheet and configured to limit separation between the top sheet and the bottom sheet proximate the inflation-limiting structures; and
each of the inflation-limiting structures is non-linear.
17 . The patient positioning system of claim 11 , wherein the bottom sheet further comprises a plurality of perforations configured to permit air to pass from the cavity to an exterior of the inflatable patient support device, the perforations defining a first pattern and a second pattern, the first pattern containing a greater number of perforations and covering a larger surface area than the second pattern.
18 . The patient positioning system of claim 1 , wherein a third corner of the inflatable patient support device and a fourth corner of the inflatable patient support device are truncated.
19 . A positioning apparatus comprising:
a wedge-shaped body having a base wall, a ramp surface, a back wall, and a front end opposite the back wall, wherein the wedge-shaped body is configured to be positioned between a patient support device and a support surface such that the base wall confronts the support surface and the ramp surface confronts a bottom surface of the patient support device, wherein the patient support device includes a first port at a first corner of the patient support device and a second port at a second corner of the patient support device, wherein the first port and the second port are configured to couple to an air output to inflate the patient support device; and
a tail including an elongated piece of material extending from the front end.
20 . The positioning apparatus of claim 19 , wherein the tail comprises a flat structure of material.
21 . The positioning apparatus of claim 19 , wherein:
a distance between the front end of the wedge-shaped body and an end of the tail opposite the wedge-shaped body defines a length of the tail; and
the tail is between 0.5 meters and 3 meters in length.
22 . The positioning apparatus of claim 19 , wherein a portion of the tail is configured to bundle to limit overhang of the tail from the support surface.
23 . The positioning apparatus of claim 19 , wherein the tail is coupled to the wedge-shaped body along an entire width of the wedge-shaped body.
24 . The positioning apparatus of claim 19 , wherein the tail is configured to slide between the bottom surface of the support device and the support surface to position the wedge-shaped body relative to a patient to support the patient in a desired position.
25 . The positioning apparatus of claim 19 , further comprising an engagement member configured to engage with a surface of at least one of the support device and the support surface to resist slipping of the positioning apparatus relative to the at least one of the support device and the support surface.
