Abstract

An adjustable weight lifting device ( 21 ) includes a tube ( 31 ), a pin ( 33 ) movably disposed inside the tube ( 31 ), the pin ( 33 ) comprising an external thread ( 35 ), and one or more driving knobs ( 51 ) extending radially inward relative to an inner wall of the tube ( 31 ) and engaging with the external thread. The external thread comprises at least one portion having a first helix angle and at least one portion having a second helix angle, the second helix angle being smaller than the first helix angle.

Claims (22)

1 . An adjustable weight lifting device, comprising:

a tube;

a pin longitudinally movably disposed inside the tube;

a housing having an opening, the tube and the pin being disposed in the opening;

a surface comprising a groove;

a tooth disposed in the groove; and

wherein the tube, the pin, the surface, and the tooth are linked such that turning the tube relative to the housing causes the tooth to move along the groove and the pin to move longitudinally relative to the tube in an amount proportional to movement of the tooth along the groove, and wherein the groove comprises a first groove component and a second groove component, and wherein, when the tooth is moved along the first groove component, the pin is moved longitudinally relative to the tube more than when the tooth is moved along the second groove component.

2 . The adjustable weight lifting device as set forth in claim 1 , wherein the surface is a surface of the pin and the groove is an external thread on the pin.

3 . The adjustable weight lifting device as set forth in claim 2 , wherein the tooth extends radially inward relative to an inner wall of the tube and engages with the external thread.

4 . The adjustable weight lifting device as set forth in claim 1 , comprising a second pin movably disposed inside the tube, wherein turning the tube relative to the housing causes the second pin to move longitudinally relative to the tube in a direction opposite a direction of movement of the pin, and in an amount proportional to movement of the tooth along the groove.

5 . The adjustable weight lifting device as set forth in claim 4 , wherein the housing comprises a first housing attached to the tube at a first end of the tube and having a first opening, the tube and the pin being disposed in the first opening, and a second housing attached to the tube at a second end of the tube and having a second opening, the tube and the second pin being disposed in the second opening.

6 . The adjustable weight lifting device as set forth in claim 1 , the housing comprising a lock that prevents rotation of the tube relative to the housing, the device comprising a base, the base having a housing supporting portion, the housing being adapted to be received in and removed from the housing supporting portion, the housing supporting portion comprising a protrusion that engages the lock when the housing is received in the housing supporting portion and permits rotation of the tube relative to the housing.

7 . A method for making an adjustable dumbbell, comprising

positioning a pin inside of a tube;

positioning the tube and pin in an opening in a housing; and

linking rotation of the tube relative to the housing to movement of a tooth along a surface comprising a groove, and linking movement of the tooth along the groove to longitudinal movement of the pin relative to the tube,

wherein the groove comprises a first groove component and a second groove component, and wherein, when the tooth is moved along the first groove component, the pin is moved longitudinally relative to the tube more than when the tooth is moved along the second groove component.

8 . The method as set forth in claim 7 , wherein the surface is a surface of the pin and the groove is an external thread on the pin.

9 . The method as set forth in claim 8 , wherein the tooth extends radially inward relative to an inner wall of the tube and engages with the external thread.

10 . The method as set forth in claim 7 , comprising positioning a second pin movably disposed inside the tube, and linking rotation of the tube relative to the housing to movement of a second tooth along a second groove, and linking movement of the second tooth along the second groove to longitudinal movement of the second pin relative to the tube.

11 . The method as set forth in claim 10 , linking rotation of the tube relative to the housing to movement of the second tooth along the second groove to longitudinal movement of the second pin relative to the tube in a direction opposite a direction of movement of the pin, and in an amount proportional to movement of the tooth along the groove.

12 . The method as set forth in claim 10 , comprising attaching a first housing to the tube at a first end of the tube, the housing having a first opening, and positioning the tube and the pin in the first opening, and attaching a second housing to the tube at a second end of the tube, the second housing having a second opening, and positioning the tube and the second pin in the second opening.
