Abstract

Embodiments describe a method of controlling a two-stroke internal combustion engine. A method of controlling a two-stroke internal combustion engine includes determining a base nominal exhaust gas temperature, determining a base barometric pressure correction to base nominal exhaust gas temperature, determining exhaust gas temperature differential, determining exhaust gas temperature injection correction, and utilizing the exhaust gas temperature injection correction to make a final short-term fuel or ignition correction.

Claims (50)

1 . A method of controlling a two-stroke internal combustion engine, the method comprising:

determining a base nominal exhaust gas temperature using a measured exhaust valve position;

determining a base barometric pressure correction to the base nominal exhaust gas temperature using a measured barometric pressure;

calculating a current exhaust gas temperature based on the base barometric pressure correction to the base nominal exhaust gas temperature;

determining an exhaust gas temperature differential by comparing the current exhaust gas temperature to the base nominal exhaust gas temperature; and

implementing a fuel correction using the exhaust gas temperature differential,

wherein the fuel correction controls a fuel injection amount in the two-stroke internal combustion engine.

2 . The method of claim 1 , wherein determining the base nominal exhaust gas temperature is based on a measured engine speed and/or a measured throttle valve angle.

3 . The method of claim 1 , wherein determining the base barometric pressure correction is based on a measured engine speed.

4 . The method of claim 1 , wherein the fuel correction is calculated based on the measured exhaust valve position and a measured engine speed.

5 . The method of claim 1 , further comprising:

initiating a baseline fuel correction for a break-in period, the break-in period including data collection of the measured exhaust valve position, a measured engine speed, a measured throttle valve angle, and/or a measured crankcase pressure,

wherein the break-in period terminates when measured engine hours exceed an engine hour criteria threshold.

6 . The method of claim 5 , further comprising:

determining a coolant system temperature; and

comparing the coolant system temperature to a coolant temperature criteria range.

7 . A method of controlling a two-stroke internal combustion engine, the method comprising:

determining a base nominal exhaust gas temperature using a measured exhaust valve position;

determining an exhaust gas temperature differential by comparing a current exhaust gas temperature to the base nominal exhaust gas temperature; and

implementing a fuel correction using the exhaust gas temperature differential,

wherein the fuel correction controls a fuel injection amount in the two-stroke internal combustion engine.

8 . The method of claim 7 , wherein determining the base nominal exhaust gas temperature is based on a measured engine speed and/or a measured throttle valve angle.

9 . The method of claim 8 , wherein the fuel correction is calculated based on the measured engine speed, the measured throttle valve angle, and the exhaust gas temperature differential.

10 . The method of claim 7 , further comprising:

determining a base barometric pressure correction to the base nominal exhaust gas temperature using a measured barometric pressure; and

correcting the base nominal exhaust gas temperature with the base barometric pressure correction to determine the current exhaust gas temperature.

11 . The method of claim 10 , wherein determining the base barometric pressure correction is based on a measured engine speed.

12 . The method of claim 7 , further comprising:

initiating a baseline fuel correction for a break-in period, the break-in period including data collection of the measured exhaust valve position, a measured engine speed, a measured throttle valve angle, and/or a measured crankcase pressure,

wherein the break-in period terminates when measured engine hours exceed an engine hour criteria threshold.

13 . The method of claim 12 , further comprising:

determining a coolant system temperature; and

comparing the coolant system temperature to a coolant temperature criteria range.

14 . A method of controlling a two-stroke internal combustion engine, the method comprising:

determining a base nominal exhaust gas temperature using a measured exhaust valve position;

determining an exhaust gas temperature differential by comparing a current exhaust gas temperature to the base nominal exhaust gas temperature; and

implementing an ignition correction using the exhaust gas temperature differential,

wherein the ignition correction controls an ignition angle in the two-stroke internal combustion engine.

15 . The method of claim 14 , wherein determining the base nominal exhaust gas temperature is based on a measured engine speed and/or a measured throttle valve angle.

16 . The method of claim 15 , wherein the ignition correction is calculated based on the measured engine speed, the measured throttle valve angle, and the exhaust gas temperature differential.

17 . The method of claim 14 , further comprising:

determining a base barometric pressure correction to the base nominal exhaust gas temperature using a measured barometric pressure; and

correcting the base nominal exhaust gas temperature with the base barometric pressure correction to determine the current exhaust gas temperature.

18 . The method of claim 17 , wherein determining the base barometric pressure correction is based on a measured engine speed.

19 . The method of claim 14 , further comprising:

initiating a baseline fuel correction for a break-in period, the break-in period including data collection of the measured exhaust valve position, a measured engine speed, a measured throttle valve angle, and/or a measured crankcase pressure,

wherein the break-in period terminates when measured engine hours exceed an engine hour criteria threshold.

20 . The method of claim 19 , further comprising:

determining a coolant system temperature; and

comparing the coolant system temperature to a coolant temperature criteria range.
