Abstract

A renewable energy generation system includes a drive motor, a flywheel in mechanical communication with the drive motor, a generator in mechanical communication with the flywheel, a charge controller in electrical communication with the generator, a plurality of charge controller switches in electrical communication with the charge controller, a plurality of batteries in electrical communication with a respective charge controller switch, and a power management module in electrical communication with the plurality of charge controller switches. The drive motor effectuates rotation of the flywheel to generate stored rotational energy which is transferred to the generator as a load is placed upon the generator to maintain a constant speed of the drive motor. The power management module selectively opens or closes a charge controller switch to permit or inhibit the flow of electrical energy to a respective battery to reduce the electrical load placed upon the generator and drive motor.

Claims (24)

1 . A flywheel system comprising:

a flywheel enclosed in a vacuum housing, the vacuum housing including a base plate, a top plate, and a vacuum plate;

a magnetic levitating disk mounted to a lower surface of the flywheel configured to levitate the flywheel from the base plate;

a magnetic coupling mounted to an upper surface of the flywheel and configured to lift the flywheel towards a first side of the vacuum plate; and

a magnetic gear assembly mounted on a second side of the vacuum plate and magnetically coupled to the magnetic coupling.

2 . The flywheel system of claim 1 , wherein the magnetic gear assembly includes a plurality of magnetic gears.

3 . The flywheel system of claim 2 , wherein a first of the plurality of magnetic gears is aligned with a centerline of the flywheel.

4 . The flywheel system of claim 3 , wherein the first of the plurality of magnetic gears is rotatably mounted on a spindle supported by the vacuum plate.

5 . The flywheel system of claim 3 , wherein rotation of the flywheel and rotation of the first of the plurality of magnetic gears correspond.

6 . The flywheel system of claim 3 , wherein a second of the plurality of gears is magnetically coupled to the first of the plurality of magnetic gears.

7 . The flywheel system of claim 6 , wherein the second of the plurality of gears is mounted to a spindle supported by the vacuum plate.

8 . The flywheel system of claim 6 , wherein the second of the plurality of gears is coupled to a drive motor.

9 . The flywheel system of claim 8 , wherein the drive motor is an alternating current motor.

10 . The flywheel system of claim 8 , wherein the drive motor is a direct current motor.

11 . The flywheel system of claim 10 , wherein the direct current motor is operably connected to a renewable energy source.

12 . The flywheel system of claim 8 , wherein the second of the plurality of gears is coupled to a generator.

13 . The flywheel system of claim 12 , wherein the generator is operably connected to an electrical load.

14 . The flywheel system of claim 2 , wherein each of the plurality of magnetic gears includes a plurality of torque magnets.

15 . The flywheel system of claim 14 , wherein poles of the plurality of torque magnets are arranged in an alternating north-south pattern.

16 . The flywheel system of claim 15 , wherein the magnetic coupling comprises a plurality of torque magnets.

17 . The flywheel system of claim 16 , wherein the plurality of torque magnets of the magnetic coupling and the plurality of torque magnets of a first of the plurality of gears are arranged to magnetically lock the magnetic coupling and the first of the plurality of gears.

18 . The flywheel system of claim 16 , wherein the torque magnets are circumferentially arranged about the magnetic coupling.

19 . The flywheel system of claim 1 , wherein the magnetic levitating disk includes a plurality of magnets secured thereto.

20 . The flywheel system of claim 19 , wherein the plurality of magnets in the levitating disk are arranged opposing a plurality of magnets formed in the base.
