Abstract

A data storage device includes: a housing integrating a control logic, a data protection logic, and a non-volatile storage; and a network interface connector integrated to the housing and is configured to be directly inserted into a network switch. The control logic is configured to store a vehicle data including a video stream in the non-volatile storage. The video stream is received from a video camera that is connected to the network switch. The data protection logic is configured to detect a vehicle event and change an operating mode of the data storage device to a read-only mode prohibiting the vehicle data stored in the non-volatile storage from being erased or tampered.

Claims (48)

1 . A data storage device comprising:

a non-volatile storage;

a communication interface; and

a processing circuit, the processing circuit being configured to:

receive data from a source over the communication interface;

store the data in the non-volatile storage;

detect a condition; and

change a mode of the data storage device from a first mode to a second mode based on detection of the condition,

wherein in the first mode, the processing circuit is configured to control the data stored in the non-volatile storage in a first manner, and in the second mode the processing circuit is configured to control the data stored in the non-volatile storage in a second manner.

2 . The data storage device of claim 1 , wherein the condition is an incident associated with a vehicle.

3 . The data storage device of claim 1 , wherein the processing circuit being configured to control the data stored in the non-volatile storage in the first manner includes the processing circuit being configured to modify the data stored in the non-volatile storage based on a write request.

4 . The data storage device of claim 1 , wherein the processing circuit being configured to control the data stored in the non-volatile storage in the second manner includes the processing circuit being configured to control modification of the data stored in the non-volatile storage based on a write request.

5 . The data storage device of claim 4 , wherein the processing circuit being configured to control modification of the data includes the processing circuit being configured to place the non-volatile storage in a read-only mode.

6 . The data storage device of claim 4 , wherein the processing circuit being configured to control modification of the data includes the processing circuit being configured to place a first portion of the non-volatile storage in a read-only mode, wherein the processing circuit is further configured to:

write second data from the source in a second portion of the non-volatile storage.

7 . The data storage device of claim 6 , wherein the processing circuit is configured to write the second data based on detecting the condition.

8 . The data storage device of claim 1 , wherein the data storage device includes a solid-state drive (SSD).

9 . The data storage device of claim 1 , wherein the source includes a video camera, and the data includes video data.

10 . The data storage device of claim 1 further comprising a transmitter distinct from the communication interface, wherein the processing circuit is configured to initiate transmission of a signal via the transmitter based on detecting the condition.

11 . The data storage device of claim 1 further comprising:

a connector for receiving power from a first power source; and

a second power source for providing power to the data storage device based on loss of power from the first power source.

12 . The data storage device of claim 1 further comprising an image processor, wherein the image processor is configured to insert a time or location information to the data.

13 . A vehicle comprising:

a communication interface;

a first component configured to generate data;

a data storage device in communication with the first component and the communication interface, the data storage device having a non-volatile storage, the data storage device being configured to:

receive the data from the first component over the communication interface;

store the data in the non-volatile storage;

detect a condition; and

change a mode of the data storage device from a first mode to a second mode based on detection of the condition,

wherein in the first mode, the data storage device is configured to control the data stored in the non-volatile storage in a first manner, and in the second mode the data storage device is configured to control the data stored in the non-volatile storage in a second manner.

14 . The vehicle of claim 13 , wherein the condition is an incident associated with the vehicle.

15 . The vehicle of claim 14 further comprising:

a second component configured to detect the incident and transmit a signal based on detecting the incident.

16 . The vehicle of claim 13 , wherein the data storage device being configured to control the data stored in the non-volatile storage in the first manner includes the data storage device being configured to modify the data stored in the non-volatile storage based on a write request.

17 . The vehicle of claim 13 , wherein the data storage device being configured to control the data stored in the non-volatile storage in the second manner includes the data storage device being configured to control modification of the data stored in the non-volatile storage based on a write request.

18 . The vehicle of claim 17 wherein the data storage device being configured to control modification of the data includes the data storage device being configured to place the non-volatile storage in a read-only mode.

19 . The vehicle of claim 18 , wherein the data storage device being configured to control modification of the data includes the data storage device being configured to place a first portion of the non-volatile storage in a read-only mode, wherein the data storage device is further configured to:

write second data from the first component in a second portion of the non-volatile storage.

20 . The vehicle of claim 19 , wherein the data storage device is configured to write the second data based on detecting the condition.

21 . The vehicle of claim 13 , wherein the data received over the communication interface includes data received from a second vehicle.

22 . A method comprising:

receiving, by a storage device, data from a source;

storing the data in a non-volatile storage of the storage device;
