Abstract

A device includes an input converter, an output converter, and a controller. The input converter is electrically coupled to an electrical meter and an energy production array. The output converter is electrically coupled to the energy production array and a load. The controller is communicatively coupled to the input converter, the output converter, the energy production array, and the load. The input converter and the output converter are positioned between the electrical meter and the load.

Claims (187)

1 . A device comprising:

an input converter electrically coupled to an electrical meter and electrically coupled to an energy production array;

an output converter electrically coupled to the energy production array and electrically coupled to a load;

a controller communicatively coupled to:

the input converter;

the output converter;

the energy production array; and

the load;

a power sharing converter; and

a direct current (DC)-to-DC converter electrically coupled to the output converter,

wherein the input converter and the output converter are positioned between the electrical meter and the load, and

wherein the power sharing converter is electrically coupled to the energy production array and to the DC-to-DC converter.

2 . The device of claim 1 , further comprising the controller communicatively coupled to a distribution feeder at a substation, wherein the controller is configured to send data to the distribution feeder and to receive data from the distribution feeder.

3 . The device of claim 1 , wherein the energy production array comprises:

a distributed generation cell;

a battery; and

a filter electrically coupled to the output converter and the load.

4 . The device of claim 1 , wherein the controller is configured to enact an energy budget by limiting an output current delivered to the load.

5 . A device comprising:

an input converter electrically coupled to an electrical meter and electrically coupled to an energy production array;

an output converter electrically coupled to the energy production array and electrically coupled to a load; and

a controller communicatively coupled to:

the input converter;

the output converter;

the energy production array; and

the load,

wherein the input converter and the output converter are positioned between the electrical meter and the load,

wherein the controller is configured to:

regulate first voltage characteristics of a first alternating current (AC) signal provided by a power line to the load; and

regulate second voltage characteristics of a second AC signal distinct from the first AC signal,

wherein the second AC signal provided via the energy production array to the power line, and

wherein the power line is electrically coupled to the electrical meter.

6 . A device comprising:

an input converter electrically coupled to an electrical meter and electrically coupled to an energy production array;

an output converter electrically coupled to the energy production array and electrically coupled to a load;

a controller communicatively coupled to:

the input converter;

the output converter;

the energy production array; and

the load; and

an output filter coupled to the output converter and a circuit breaker panel,

wherein the input converter and the output converter are positioned between the electrical meter and the load, and

wherein the controller is configured to enact an energy budget by controlling one or more circuit breakers within the circuit breaker panel.

7 . A device comprising:

an input converter electrically coupled to an electrical meter and electrically coupled to an energy production array:

an output converter electrically coupled to the energy production array and electrically coupled to a load; and

a controller communicatively coupled to:

the input converter;

the output converter;

the energy production array;

the load; and

a plurality of switches,

wherein the controller is configured to send one or more instructions to one or more of the plurality of switches to electrically couple the electrical meter to the load, thereby bypassing the device.

8 . A device comprising:

an input converter electrically coupled to an electrical meter and electrically coupled to an energy production array;

an output converter electrically coupled to the energy production array and electrically coupled to a load; and

a controller communicatively coupled to:

the input converter;

the output converter;

the energy production array;

the load; and

a plurality of switches,

wherein the controller is configured to send one or more instructions to one or more of the plurality of switches to bypass the input converter.

9 . A device comprising:

an input converter electrically coupled to an electrical meter and electrically coupled to an energy production array;

an output converter electrically coupled to the energy production array and electrically coupled to a load; and

a controller communicatively coupled to:

the input converter;

the output converter;

the energy production array;

the load; and

a plurality of switches,

wherein the controller is configured to send one or more instructions to one or more of the plurality of switches to bypass the output converter.

10 . A system comprising:

an energy production array;

a plurality of switches;

an input converter, wherein the input converter is electrically coupled to:

an electrical meter; and

the energy production array;

an output converter, wherein the output converter is electrically coupled to:

the energy production array; and

a load;

a controller communicatively coupled to:

the plurality of switches;

the input converter;

the output converter;

the energy production array; and

the load;

a power sharing converter; and

a direct current (DC)-to-DC converter electrically coupled to the output converter

wherein the power sharing converter is electrically coupled to the energy production array and to the DC-to-DC converter, and

wherein the input converter and the output converter are positioned between the electrical meter and the load.

11 . The system of claim 10 , wherein the energy production array comprises:

a distributed generation cell;

a battery; and

a filter electrically coupled to the output converter and the load.

12 . The system of claim 10 , wherein the controller is configured to enact an energy budget by limiting an output current delivered to the load.

13 . A system comprising:

an energy production array;

a plurality of switches;

an input converter, wherein the input converter is electrically coupled to:

an electrical meter; and

the energy production array;

an output converter, wherein the output converter is electrically coupled to:

the energy production array; and

a load; and

a controller communicatively coupled to:

the plurality of switches;

the input converter;

the output converter;

the energy production array; and

the load,

wherein the input converter and the output converter are positioned between the electrical meter and the load,

wherein the controller is configured to:

regulate first voltage characteristics of a first alternating current (AC) signal provided by a power line to the load; and

regulate second voltage characteristics of a second AC signal distinct from the first AC signal,

wherein the second AC signal provided via the energy production array to the power line, and

wherein the power line is electrically coupled to the electrical meter.

14 . A system comprising:

an energy production array;

a plurality of switches;

an input converter, wherein the input converter is electrically coupled to:

an electrical meter; and

the energy production array;

an output converter, wherein the output converter is electrically coupled to:

the energy production array; and

a load;

a controller communicatively coupled to:

the plurality of switches;

the input converter;

the output converter;

the energy production array; and

the load; and

an output filter coupled to the output converter and a circuit breaker panel,

wherein the input converter and the output converter are positioned between the electrical meter and the load, and

wherein the controller is configured to enact an energy budget by controlling one or more circuit breakers within the circuit breaker panel.

15 . A system comprising:

an energy production array;

a plurality of switches;

an input converter, wherein the input converter is electrically coupled to:

an electrical meter; and

the energy production array;

an output converter, wherein the output converter is electrically coupled to:

the energy production array; and

a load; and

a controller communicatively coupled to:

the plurality of switches;

the input converter;

the output converter;

the energy production array; and

the load,

wherein the input converter and the output converter are positioned between the electrical meter and the load, and

wherein the controller is configured to send one or more instructions to one or more of the plurality of switches to electrically couple the electrical meter to the load, thereby bypassing the system.

16 . A system comprising:

an energy production array;

a plurality of switches;

an input converter, wherein the input converter is electrically coupled to:

an electrical meter; and

the energy production array;

an output converter, wherein the output converter is electrically coupled to:

the energy production array; and

a load; and

a controller communicatively coupled to:

the plurality of switches;

the input converter;

the output converter;

the energy production array; and

the load,

wherein the input converter and the output converter are positioned between the electrical meter and the load, and

wherein the controller is configured to send one or more instructions to one or more of the plurality of switches to bypass the input converter.

17 . A system comprising:

an energy production array;

a plurality of switches;

an input converter, wherein the input converter is electrically coupled to:

an electrical meter; and

the energy production array;

an output converter, wherein the output converter is electrically coupled to:

the energy production array; and

a load; and

a controller communicatively coupled to:

the plurality of switches;

the input converter;

the output converter;

the energy production array; and

the load,

wherein the input converter and the output converter are positioned between the electrical meter and the load, and

wherein the controller is configured to send one or more instructions to one or more of the plurality of switches to bypass the output converter.
