Abstract

System for present content. The system includes means for receiving a set of timepoints relating to a content data and means for generating display signals based on the content data. The system also includes means for sending display signals to a display device that represent the content data and means for notifying a server over the Internet, that a timepoint among the set of timepoints has been reached in the content data. The system also includes means for receiving, from the server, via the Internet, an identification of one or more particular additional content and in response to receiving the identification of the one or more particular additional content from the server, means for interrupting presentation of the content data; and presenting the one or more particular additional content. The system further includes means for resuming, presentation of the content data after presenting the one or more particular additional content.

Claims (42)

1 . A method performed by a user device in communication with a plurality of servers, the method comprising:

transmitting a first message associated with requested content data to at least one server of the plurality of servers;

receiving from at least one server of the plurality of servers, prior to the user device displaying the requested content data: (a) a content data uniform resource locator (URL) that is used to access the requested content data stored on an at least one content storage device; and (b) a timepoint of the requested content data;

transmitting, based at least in part on the content data URL, a second message to at least one server of the plurality of servers, wherein the second message requests the requested content data;

receiving the requested content data from at least one server of the plurality of servers,

displaying the requested content data;

transmitting a third message to at least one server of the plurality of servers at a time that is based at least in part on the timepoint;

receiving, prior to the user device displaying a selected supplemental content data: a plurality of supplemental content data uniform resource locators (URLs) that is used to access the selected supplemental content data for display by the user device at the timepoint of the requested content data, wherein:

the selected supplemental content data is stored on an at least one supplemental content storage device, and

the selected supplemental content data is selected by at least one server of the plurality of servers based at least in part on the third message;

transmitting, based at least in part on the plurality of supplemental content data URLs, a fourth message to at least one server of the plurality of servers, wherein the fourth message requests the selected supplemental content data;

receiving, based at least in part on the fourth message, the selected supplemental content data from at least one server of the plurality of servers; and

displaying the selected supplemental content data at the timepoint.

2 . The method of claim 1 , wherein the selected supplemental content data comprises a plurality of advertisements.

3 . The method of claim 2 , wherein each supplemental content data URL of the plurality of supplemental content data URLs corresponds to an advertisement of the plurality of advertisements.

4 . The method of claim 1 , further comprising transmitting a fifth message indicating that the user device displayed the selected supplemental content data.

5 . The method of claim 1 , wherein the user device is caused to transmit the fourth message at a second time that is based at least in part on the timepoint.

6 . The method of claim 1 , wherein the requested content data comprises data for displaying a content item.

7 . The method of claim 6 , wherein the content data URL identifies at least one server of the plurality of servers and the content item.

8 . The method of claim 1 , wherein the user device transmits the first message to at least one server of the plurality of servers using the internet.

9 . An apparatus in communication with a plurality of servers, the apparatus comprising:

control circuitry; and

at least one memory including computer program code for one or more programs, the at least one memory and the computer program code configured to, with the control circuitry, cause the apparatus to perform functions comprising:

transmitting a first message associated with requested content data to at least one server of the plurality of servers;

receiving from at least one server of the plurality of servers, prior to the apparatus displaying the requested content data: (a) a content data uniform resource locator (URL) that is used to access the requested content data stored on an at least one content storage device; and (b) a timepoint of the requested content data;

transmitting, based at least in part on the content data URL, a second message to at least one server of the plurality of servers, wherein the second message requests the requested content data;

receiving the requested content data from at least one server of the plurality of servers,

displaying the requested content data;

transmitting a third message to at least one server of the plurality of servers at a time that is based at least in part on the timepoint;

receiving, prior to the apparatus displaying a selected supplemental content data: a plurality of supplemental content data uniform resource locators (URLs) that is used to access the selected supplemental content data for display by the apparatus at the timepoint of the requested content data, wherein:

the selected supplemental content data is stored on an at least one supplemental content storage device, and

the selected supplemental content data is selected by at least one server of the plurality of servers based at least in part on the third message;

transmitting, based at least in part on the plurality of supplemental content data URLs, a fourth message to at least one server of the plurality of servers, wherein the fourth message requests the selected supplemental content data;

receiving, based at least in part on the fourth message, the selected supplemental content data from at least one server of the plurality of servers; and

displaying the selected supplemental content data at the timepoint.

10 . The apparatus of claim 9 , wherein the selected supplemental content data comprises a plurality of advertisements.

11 . The apparatus of claim 10 , wherein each supplemental content data URL of the plurality of supplemental content data URLs corresponds to an advertisement of the plurality of advertisements.

12 . The apparatus of claim 9 , wherein the apparatus is further caused to transmit a fifth message indicating that the apparatus displayed the selected supplemental content data.

13 . The apparatus of claim 9 , wherein the apparatus is caused to transmit the fourth message at a second time that is based at least in part on the timepoint.

14 . The apparatus of claim 9 , wherein the requested content data comprises data for displaying a content item.

15 . The apparatus of claim 14 , wherein the content data URL identifies at least one server of the plurality of servers and the content item.

16 . The apparatus of claim 9 , wherein the apparatus transmits the first message to at least one server of the plurality of servers using the internet.
