Abstract

A system that incorporates the subject disclosure may include, for example, a method for measuring a power level in at least a portion of a plurality of resource blocks occurring in a radio frequency spectrum, wherein the measuring occurs for a plurality of time cycles to generate a plurality of power level measurements, calculating a baseline power level according to at least a portion of the plurality of power levels, determining a threshold from the baseline power level, and monitoring at least a portion of the plurality of resource blocks for signal interference according to the threshold. Other embodiments are disclosed.

measuring, by a processing system including a processor, a plurality of power level measurements over a plurality of frequency increments across a frequency spectrum over time;

calculating, by the processing system, an average power level for each frequency increment of the plurality of frequency increments according to the plurality of power level measurements, resulting in a plurality of average power levels;

detecting, by the processing system, a signal interference in a first segment of the plurality of segments according to a threshold that is in accordance with the plurality of average power levels; and

determining, by the processing system, whether to mitigate the signal interference based on an application of weights to the plurality of average power levels and based on a correlation analysis of the signal interference in the first segment, wherein based on the correlation analysis interferers with a frequency of occurrence less than a second threshold are ignored,

wherein a priority for mitigation is determined based on: frequency of occurrence of the signal interference and time of day of the signal interference, and

wherein the priority for mitigation is further determined based on: an effect the signal interference has on network traffic, an amount of filtering resources available at the processing system relative to a number of filtering events, or a combination thereof.

2 . The method of claim 1 , further comprising:

identifying, by the processing system, a plurality of highest average power levels of the plurality of average power levels; and

discarding, by the processing system, the plurality of highest average power levels from the plurality of average power levels prior to the detecting of the signal interference in the first segment.

3 . The method of claim 1 , further comprising mitigating, by the processing system, the signal interference in the first segment responsive to a determination to mitigate the signal interference.

4 . The method of claim 3 , wherein the mitigating includes steering an antenna.

5 . The method of claim 4 , wherein the antenna is included as part of a base station.

6 . The method of claim 3 , wherein the mitigating includes filtering the signal interference.

7 . The method of claim 3 , wherein the mitigating includes submitting a notification message, wherein the notification message comprises spectral information associated with the signal interference.

8 . The method of claim 3 , wherein the mitigating includes avoiding the signal interference.

9 . The method of claim 1 , further comprising determining, by the processing system, an identification of a source of the signal interference in the first segment.

10 . The method of claim 9 , further comprising instructing, by the processing system, the source of the signal interference to perform an action that reduces or eliminates the signal interference.

11 . The method of claim 1 , wherein the plurality of segments is used for communication in a wireless communication system that operates according to a long term evolution (LTE) protocol.

12 . The method of claim 1 , further comprising transmitting, by the processing system, signals to perform downlink communications or uplink communications, wherein the signals transmitted in the downlink communications are orthogonal frequency-division multiple access (OFDMA) signals, and wherein the signals transmitted in the uplink communications are single carrier frequency-division multiple access (SC-FDMA) signals.

13 . The method of claim 1 , comprising ignoring, by the processing system, a second segment of the plurality of segments when the second segment is determined to have no data traffic.

14 . A non-transitory machine-readable storage medium comprising executable instructions that, when executed by a processing system including a processor, facilitate performance of operations, comprising:

for at least some of a plurality of segments used in a communication system:

determining a plurality of power levels over a plurality of frequency increments across a frequency spectrum, wherein each power level of the plurality of power levels is based on a plurality of power level measurements over time;

detecting a signal interference in a first segment of the plurality of segments according to a threshold that is in accordance with at least a portion of the plurality of power levels; and

determining whether to mitigate the signal interference based on an application of weights to the plurality of power levels and based on a correlation analysis of the signal interference in the first segment, wherein based on the correlation analysis interferers with a frequency of occurrence less than a second threshold are ignored,

wherein a priority for mitigation is determined based on: frequency of occurrence of the signal interference and time of day of the signal interference, and

wherein the priority for mitigation is further determined based on: an effect the signal interference has on network traffic, an amount of filtering resources available at the processing system relative to a number of filtering events, or a combination thereof.
