Abstract

A device for suture thread cutting, containing: an external tube having a slot with a distal first edge; an internal cutter having an opening with a second edge, the wherein the slot and opening together form a pathway which guides the suture thread; wherein the internal cutter is positioned and is fitted inside the external tube; wherein the external tube and the internal cutter are movable relative to each other whereby the first and second edges are movable from a first position, in which the first and second edges are spaced a first distance apart, to a second position, in which the first and second edges are spaced a second distance apart, the first distance larger than the second distance, wherein in the first position the suture thread is retained within the slot and wherein in the second position the suture thread is cut between the first and second edges.

Claims (29)

1 . A device for cutting a suture thread, comprising:

a handle;

a stationary external element having a channel at the distal end, and a proximal end connected to said handle, said channel is fitted and shaped for holding a suture thread;

a movable cutter having a cutting edge, partially inserted into said handle, said cutting edge is configured to move between a first position and a second position in said channel;

wherein in said first position the suture thread is retained within the channel and in said second position the suture thread is cut; and

a force-activated lever, wherein said lever is configured to selectively move said movable cutter between said first position and said second position upon force exertion on said lever;

wherein said lever includes a longitudinal opening, and wherein movement of said longitudinal opening in a proximal direction relative to a pin in the handle, upon force exertion on said lever, generates a movement of said movable cutter in a distal direction.

2 . The device of claim 1 , including a locking button operative to retain said movable cutter in said first position for retaining the suture thread.

3 . The device of claim 2 , wherein said locking button is displaceable sideways to move said movable cutter to said second position for cutting the suture thread.

4 . The device of claim 2 , wherein said lever further comprises a recess for locking said locking button when said movable cutter is in said first position for retaining the suture thread.

5 . The device of claim 1 , wherein said channel is a diagonally extending channel crossing said stationary external element.

6 . The device of claim 1 , wherein said handle has a distal end, said device further comprising a bushing inserted in said handle distal end; and

wherein said movable cutter is partially disposed within said handle distal end and is coupled to said handle by said bushing.

7 . The device of claim 1 , wherein said movable cutter is configured to apply shear forces on the suture thread when moved to said second position.

8 . The device of claim 1 , wherein said movable cutter includes a cutting edge.

9 . The device of claim 1 , wherein said movable cutter is configured to slide in an axial direction towards said channel in said stationary external element upon force exertion on said lever.

10 . The device of claim 1 , wherein said lever is partially inserted into said handle.

11 . The device of claim 1 , wherein said handle includes a longitudinal groove and wherein said lever is configured to be slidingly guided within said longitudinal groove.

12 . A method for cutting a suture thread by a cutting device, wherein the cutting device includes a handle, said method comprising:

inserting the suture thread into a channel of the cutting device, the channel connected to the handle; and

applying pressure on a lever to move a cutter of the cutting device from a first position in which the suture thread is retained within the channel and a second position in which the suture thread is cut by the cutter of the cutting device;

wherein said applying includes exerting force on the lever to move a longitudinal opening in the lever in a proximal direction relative to a pin in the handle, to generate movement of the cutter in a distal direction.

13 . The method of claim 12 wherein, in said first position, the suture thread is retained within the channel of the cutting device, wherein said retaining allows freely moving of the suture thread within the cutting device.

14 . The method of claim 12 , further including sliding said cutting device along the suture thread, before said cutting.

15 . The method of claim 14 , wherein said sliding includes pushing a knot towards sutured tissue.

16 . The method of claim 12 wherein, in said second position, the method includes at least one of:

applying shear forces on the suture thread by a cutting edge of the cutter; and

sliding the cutter in an axial direction.

17 . The method of claim 12 , wherein said cutter is movable in a proximal direction from said first position to a third position in which the suture thread is insertable into the channel.
