Minimally traumatic trocar apparatus and kit for subcutaneous medication delivery
A minimally traumatic trocar apparatus for delivering one or more medication pellets to a subcutaneous insertion site is described. The minimally traumatic trocar apparatus includes a blunt cannula and an obturator. The blunt cannula includes a tubular cannula body having an anterior end with a surface that has a smooth edge. The blunt cannula also includes a medication slot disposed along the tubular cannula body and an inner diameter that is at least 3 millimeters (mm). The obturator includes an anterior rounded tip. The obturator body is inserted within the tubular cannula body so that the obturator extends through the tubular cannula body so that the anterior rounded tip of the obturator extends past the anterior end of the tubular cannula body.

a cannula handle fixedly coupled to the tubular cannula body;
a tubular obturator that includes an anterior rounded tip and a tubular obturator body that is inserted within the tubular cannula body, wherein the tubular obturator body includes an opening located along the tubular obturator body, in which the opening forms a passage from an exterior of the tubular obturator body to an interior of the tubular obturator body;
an obturator handle fixedly coupled to the tubular obturator body;
a first coupling element proximate to the cannula handle that includes a notch, and a second coupling element proximate to the obturator handle that includes a tab;
wherein the notch interfaces with the tab such that the anterior rounded tip of the tubular obturator extends past the anterior end of the blunt cannula;
wherein the blunt cannula and the tubular obturator operate as a single unit during insertion into the subcutaneous insertion site; and
wherein the tubular obturator includes a posterior end having a receptor that interfaces with tubing to receive a hydrodissecting fluid and deliver the hydrodissecting fluid through the interior of the tubular obturator body and out of the opening.
2 . The minimally traumatic trocar apparatus of claim 1 wherein the cannula includes at least one cannula marking corresponding to a medication length of the one or more medication pellets and wherein the obturator further includes at least one marking corresponding to the medication length.
3 . The minimally traumatic trocar apparatus of claim 1 wherein the cannula has a length that ranges from 13 cm to 17 cm and the obturator has a length that ranges from 18 cm to 22 cm.
4 . The minimally traumatic trocar apparatus of claim 1 that aligns at least two medication pellets of the one or more medication pellets along a non-linear path.
5 . The minimally traumatic trocar apparatus of claim 1 wherein the tubular cannula body includes an outer diameter of at least 3.5 mm, and the obturator includes an outer diameter of at least 3 mm.
6 . A minimally traumatic trocar system for delivering one or more medication pellets to a subcutaneous insertion site, the minimally traumatic trocar system comprising:

a cannula handle fixedly coupled to the tubular cannula body;
an obturator that includes an anterior rounded tip and an obturator body, wherein the obturator body includes at least one opening located along the obturator body, in which the opening forms a passage from an exterior of the obturator body to an interior of the obturator body;
an obturator handle fixedly coupled to the obturator body;
a first coupling element proximate to the cannula handle that includes a notch, and a second coupling element proximate to the obturator handle that includes a tab;
wherein the notch interfaces with the tab such that the anterior rounded tip of the obturator extends past the anterior end of the blunt cannula;
wherein the blunt cannula and the obturator operate as a single unit during insertion into the subcutaneous insertion site;
wherein the obturator includes a posterior end having a receptor that interfaces with tubing to receive a hydrodissecting fluid and deliver the hydrodissecting fluid through the interior of the obturator body and out of the opening;
the obturator is removed from the tubular cannula body; and
the anterior rounded tip of the obturator pushes the one or more medication pellets through the tubular cannula body to the subcutaneous insertion site.
