Abstract

A teleoperated surgical system is provided that includes a surgical instrument that includes an end effector mounted for rotation about a slave pivot axis; a master control input includes a mount member, first and second master grip rotatably secured at the mount member for rotation about a master pivot axis; sensor to produce a sensor signal indicative of a slave grip counter-force about the slave pivot axis; one or more motors to impart a shear force to the mount member, perpendicular to the master pivot axis; one or more processors to convert the sensor signal to motor control signals to cause the motors to impart the feedback shear force to the first and second master grip members.

Claims (57)

1 . A master control input of a surgical control system, the master control input comprising:

a first input member,

a second input member, the second input member being movable relative to the first input member along a first path, and

a feedback generator to provide a feedback force at the master control input on a second path separate from the first path.

2 . The master control input of claim 1 , wherein:

the first input member and the second input member are movably coupled to a support linkage; and

the feedback generator includes an actuator operably coupled to the support linkage.

3 . The master control input of claim 2 , wherein:

the actuator is configured to apply a force to the support linkage along the second path.

4 . The master control input of claim 2 , wherein:

the actuator generates the feedback force without articulating the support linkage.

5 . The master control input of claim 1 , wherein:

the second path is in a direction toward a palm of a hand of an operator on a condition that the hand of the operator is engaged with the master control input.

6 . The master control input of claim 1 , wherein:

the first input member in the second input member are ungrounded.

7 . The master control input of claim 1 , wherein:

the master control input is operably coupled to a control system;

the control system is configured to receive a force signal indicative of a sensed force magnitude; and

the control system is configured to generate a feedback control signal for the feedback generator.

8 . The master control input of claim 7 , wherein:

the feedback force is proportional to the sensed force magnitude associated with the force signal.

9 . The master control input of claim 7 , wherein:

the feedback force is continuously proportional to the sensed force magnitude.

10 . The master control input of claim 7 , wherein:

the feedback force is an oscillating force.

11 . The master control input of claim 7 , wherein:

the force signal is received from a surgical instrument.

12 . The master control input of claim 1 , wherein:

the master control input is operably coupled to a control system;

the control system is configured to generate a force signal from a virtual surgical instrument within a simulation environment; and

the control system is configured to generate a feedback control signal for the feedback generator.

13 . A teleoperated surgical system comprising:

a surgical instrument including an end effector, the end effector having a first cantilever beam that is rotatable about an end effector pivot axis;

a master control input including:

a support linkage,

a first input member having a distal end rotatably coupled to the support linkage at an input pivot axis,

a second input member having a distal end rotatably coupled to the support linkage at the input pivot axis, the support linkage being between the first input member and the second input member, and

a bias member disposed to urge a proximal end of the first input member and a proximal end of the second input member apart from each other along a first path;

a sensor configured to produce a sensor signal indicative of a magnitude of a moment about the end effector pivot axis resulting from a movement of the first cantilever beam;

one or more actuators operably coupled to the support linkage, the one or more actuators being configured to impart a feedback force to the support linkage in a direction that is perpendicular to the input pivot axis; and

a control system configured to generate one or more actuator control signals to cause the one or more actuators to impart the feedback force along a second path that is different than the first path.

14 . The teleoperated surgical system of claim 13 , wherein:

the second path is in a direction toward a palm of a hand of an operator on a condition that the hand of the operator is engaged with the master control input.
