Abstract

A printing apparatus includes a fixing unit configured to fix an image onto a printing medium by heating the printing medium on which the image is printed, a measuring unit configured to measure a length of the printing medium after heating of the printing medium in the fixing unit, a deriving unit configured to derive a characteristic of a deformation amount of the printing medium with respect to temperature based on the measured length, a receiving unit configured to receive a specification of a deformation amount threshold, and a determining unit configured to determine a fixation temperature in fixation of the image onto the printing medium by the fixing unit, based on the derived characteristic and the received deformation amount threshold.

Claims (23)

1 . A printing apparatus comprising:

a fixing unit configured to fix an image onto a printing medium by heating the printing medium on which the image is printed;

a measuring unit configured to measure a length of the printing medium after heating of the printing medium in the fixing unit;

a deriving unit configured to derive a characteristic of a deformation amount of the printing medium with respect to temperature based on the measured length;

a receiving unit configured to receive a specification of a deformation amount threshold; and

a determining unit configured to determine a fixation temperature in fixation of the image onto the printing medium by the fixing unit, by calculating a maximum temperature at which the characteristic derived by the deriving unit does not exceed the deformation amount threshold,

wherein the determining unit is configured to set melting temperature as the fixation temperature, when the calculated maximum temperature is lower than a melting temperature of an ink used in printing.

2 . The printing apparatus according to claim 1 , wherein the receiving unit receives an input of the deformation amount threshold by a user.

3 . The printing apparatus according to claim 1 , wherein the receiving unit receives the specification of the deformation amount threshold selected by a user from among a plurality of the deformation amount thresholds set in advance.

4 . The printing apparatus according to claim 1 , wherein the receiving unit receives a specification of a type of the printing medium, and the deformation amount threshold varies depending on the type of the printing medium.

5 . The printing apparatus according to claim 1 , wherein the receiving unit receives a selection of a print mode, and the deformation amount threshold varies depending on the print mode.

6 . The printing apparatus according to claim 1 , wherein the receiving unit determines the deformation amount threshold corresponding to an item that is specified as enabled from among:

an item in which an input of the deformation amount threshold by a user is receivable,

an item in which specification of a type of the printing medium is receivable, and

an item in which selection of a print mode is receivable.

7 . The printing apparatus according to claim 1 , wherein the receiving unit receives the specification through a screen configured to receive the specification.

8 . The printing apparatus according to claim 1 , wherein the determining unit determines the fixation temperature such that the fixation temperature is equal to or higher than a melting temperature of ink used in printing.

9 . The printing apparatus according to claim 1 , wherein the determining unit is configured to determine a temperature lower than a heating temperature range in the fixing unit as the fixation temperature.

10 . The printing apparatus according to claim 1 , wherein

the image is a pattern having a predetermined length on the printing medium, and

the measuring unit measures the length of the pattern printed on the printing medium by measuring reflected light from the pattern, and thereby measures the length of the printing medium.

11 . The printing apparatus according to claim 1 , wherein the deriving unit derives the characteristic of the deformation amount of the printing medium at each of three temperatures including a first temperature before the heating and a second temperature and a third temperature after the heating.

12 . The printing apparatus according to claim 1 , wherein the measuring unit measures an inter-pattern length between a first pattern and a second pattern printed on the printing medium by detecting reflected light from the printed patterns.
