Abstract

Embodiments of the present invention provide glass compositions, fiberizable glass compositions, and glass fibers formed from such compositions, as well as glass strands, yarns, fabrics, and composites comprising such glass fibers adapted for use in various applications. In some embodiments of the present invention, the glass compositions additionally include at least one rare earth oxide.

Claims (96)

1 . A glass composition suitable for fiber forming comprising:

SiO 2

56-68

weight percent;

Al 2 O 3

11 to less than 18

weight percent;

CaO

5.1 to 12

weight percent;

MgO

7-17

weight percent;

Na 2 O

0-0.2

weight percent;

K 2 O

greater than 0-1

weight percent;

Li 2 O

weight percent;

TiO 2

weight percent;

B 2 O 3

weight percent;

Fe 2 O 3

weight percent;

SnO 2

weight percent;

ZnO

weight percent;

at least one rare earth oxide in an amount not less than 0.05 weight percent; and

other constituents 0-11 weight percent total.

2 . The glass composition of claim 1 , wherein the at least one rare earth oxide is selected from the group consisting of La 2 O 3 , Y 2 O 3 , Sc 2 O 3 , CeO 2 , Sm 2 O 3 , Nb 2 O 5 , and Gd 2 O 3 .

3 . The glass composition of claim 1 , wherein Al 2 O 3 is 14 to less than 18 weight percent.

4 . The glass composition of claim 1 , wherein MgO is 10-17 weight percent.

5 . The glass composition of claim 1 , wherein Na 2 O+K 2 O is greater than 0 to less than 0.5 weight percent.

6 . The glass composition of claim 1 , wherein the at least one rare earth oxide is at least 3 weight percent.

7 . The glass composition of claim 1 , wherein ZnO is greater than 0 to 4 weight percent.

8 . The glass composition of claim 1 , wherein SnO 2 is greater than 0 to 4 weight percent.

9 . The glass composition of claim 1 , wherein CeO 2 is greater than 0 to 4 weight percent.

10 . The glass composition of claim 1 , wherein the glass composition is substantially free of B 2 O 3 .

11 . A glass composition suitable for fiber forming comprising:

SiO 2

Al 2 O 3

11 to less than 18

weight percent;

weight percent;

weight percent;

weight percent;

greater than 0-1

weight percent;

at least one rare earth oxide in an amount greater than 3.0 weight percent; and

other constituents 0-11 weight percent total.

12 . The glass composition of claim 11 , wherein the at least one rare earth oxide is selected from the group consisting of La 2 O 3 , Y 2 O 3 , Sc 2 O 3 , CeO 2 , Sm 2 O 3 , Nb 2 O 5 , and Gd 2 O 3 .

13 . The glass composition of claim 11 , wherein Al 2 O 3 is 14 to less than 18 weight percent.

14 . The glass composition of claim 11 , wherein MgO is 10-17 weight percent.

15 . The glass composition of claim 11 , wherein Na 2 O+K 2 O is greater than 0 to less than 0.5 weight percent.

16 . The glass composition of claim 11 , wherein the at least one rare earth oxide is greater than 3 weight percent and the composition is substantially free of MnO.

17 . The glass composition of claim 11 , wherein ZnO is greater than 0 to 4 weight percent.

18 . The glass composition of claim 11 , wherein SnO 2 is greater than 0 to 4 weight percent.

19 . The glass composition of claim 11 , wherein CeO 2 is greater than 0 to 4 weight percent.

20 . The glass composition of claim 11 , wherein the glass composition is substantially free of B 2 O 3 .
