Abstract

Systems and techniques may include enhancing production of a natural resource from a reservoir in the earth. A technique may include, in a reservoir comprising a first and a second well, pumping a first material down the first well into the reservoir, and circulating the first material through the reservoir at a first flow rate and up the second well for a period of time, the first material interacting with a proppant in a fracture zone in the reservoir or reacting with a formation in the fracture zone, or reacting with both. A first permeability of the fracture zone in the reservoir may be reduced to define a reduced permeability. The reduced permeability in first fracture zone may direct the flow of the material to a second fracture zone, increasing the flow of material in a second fraction zone, and the permeability of the second fraction zone may be reduced.

Claims (32)

1 . A method of redistributing permeability of a fracture zone of a reservoir, comprising:

circulating a permeability reducing material through the fracture zone of the reservoir, wherein a flow of the permeability reducing material causes self-correcting feedbacks in permeability changes, and the flow of the permeability reducing material and the self-correcting feedbacks decrease variances between permeabilities of flow pathways in the fracture zone;

exposing, in a first circulation of the permeability reducing material, first flow pathways of a first permeability to the permeability reducing material, the first permeability of the first flow pathways reduced by the permeability reducing material to a second permeability; and

exposing, in a second circulation of the permeability reducing material, second flow pathways of a third permeability to the permeability reducing material in response to a first self-correcting feedback from the first circulation causing a redirection of the permeability reducing material from the first flow pathways to the second flow pathways, the third permeability greater than the second permeability and less than the first permeability, the third permeability reduced by the permeability reducing material to a fourth permeability, the second permeability and the fourth permeability being within a threshold variance of permeability.

2 . The method of claim 1 , wherein the first self-correcting feedback comprises the second permeability of the first flow pathways being higher than the third permeability.

3 . The method of claim 1 , wherein the permeability reducing material reacts with a first fracture wall of the first flow pathways to precipitate minerals onto the first fracture wall and decrease a void space in the first flow pathways.

4 . The method of claim 3 , wherein the minerals are precipitated from a second fracture wall of third flow pathways to the first fracture wall of the first flow pathways, increasing permeability of the third flow pathways.

5 . The method of claim 1 , wherein the first flow pathways are proppant-packed pathways, the permeability reducing material reacts with proppant grains of the first flow pathways to mobilize proppant material within the first flow pathways and decrease a void space in the first flow pathways.

6 . The method of claim 5 , wherein the proppant material is mobilized from third flow pathways to the first flow pathways, increasing permeability of the third flow pathways.

7 . The method of claim 1 , wherein the permeability reducing material comprises a thermally activated chemical solution that reacts with at least one of proppant material or fracture wall material at temperatures above a threshold temperature.

8 . The method of claim 1 , wherein circulating the permeability reducing material comprises:

pumping the permeability reducing material down a first well into the reservoir and up a second well from the reservoir at a first flow rate for a period of time.

9 . The method of claim 1 , further comprising:

producing a natural resource from the reservoir, production of the natural resource increased by a reduction in the variances between the permeabilities of the flow pathways in the fracture zone.

10 . The method of claim 9 , wherein the natural resource is a geothermal resource.

11 . The method of claim 1 , wherein the permeability reducing material comprises a colloid.

12 . The method of claim 1 , wherein the permeability reducing material comprises a nanocomposite.

13 . The method of claim 1 , wherein the permeability reducing material comprises a chemical that reacts with proppant material or fracture wall material in the fracture zone.

14 . The method of claim 1 , further comprising:

applying the permeability reducing material to the fracture zone using coiled tubing.

15 . A system comprising:

a first well of a reservoir;

a second well of the reservoir; and

a fracture zone of the reservoir, wherein permeability of the fracture zone is redistributed by performing operations comprising:

circulating a permeability reducing material through the fracture zone of the reservoir, wherein a flow of the permeability reducing material causes self-correcting feedbacks in permeability changes, and the flow of the permeability reducing material and the self-correcting feedbacks decrease variances between permeabilities of flow pathways in the fracture zone;

exposing, in a first circulation of the permeability reducing material, first flow pathways of a first permeability to the permeability reducing material, the first permeability of the first flow pathways reduced by the permeability reducing material to a second permeability; and

exposing, in a second circulation of the permeability reducing material, second flow pathways of a third permeability to the permeability reducing material in response to a first self-correcting feedback from the first circulation causing a redirection of the permeability reducing material from the first flow pathways to the second flow pathways, the third permeability greater than the second permeability and less than the first permeability, the third permeability reduced by the permeability reducing material to a fourth permeability, the second permeability and the fourth permeability being within a threshold variance of permeability.
