Dynamically modifying the presentation of an e-label
An electronic label (e-label) device that monitors situational data and displays an e-label. When the device detects an appearance modification event trigger based on the situational data, it modifies the appearance of the e-label being displayed by the e-label device, for example, by enlarging the machine-readable portion (e.g., barcode portion) of the displayed e-label. A related method and computer program product are also described.
1 . An e-label device for displaying an electronic label (e-label) on a product, the e-label being affixed to the product, the e-label device comprising:
a display screen that displays the e-label;
one or more devices configured to provide situational data associated with the e-label device, the situational data comprising data associated with one or more electronic external devices when the product is in a presence of the one or more electronic external devices;
an electronic logic circuit that is operably coupled to the display screen and the one or more devices,
wherein the electronic logic circuit is configured to:
detect, automatically and using the electronic logic circuit, an appearance modification event trigger based on the situational data, the appearance modification event trigger detected based on sensor data from sensors implemented by the e-label device, the sensor data including at least one of accelerometer data, gyroscope data, position data, or camera data;
determine, automatically and using the electronic logic circuit, an orientation of the product based on the gyroscope data and the accelerometer data; and
modify, automatically and using the electronic logic circuit, based on the situational data and the orientation, an appearance of the e-label on the display screen in response to the appearance modification event trigger, the appearance modification event trigger defining at least one of conditions or criteria indicating when the product is within a threshold distance of the one or more electronic external devices, the modified appearance of the e-label including an enlargement of a scanning portion of the product.
2 . The e-label device of claim 1 , wherein the situational data comprise at least one of:
a location of the e-label device;
accelerometer data from the e-label device;
gyroscope data from the e-label device; or
beacon signals received by the e-label device, wherein the e-label device is configured to determine its location based on the beacon signals.
3 . The e-label device of claim 1 , wherein the logic circuit is further configured to modify the appearance of the e-label by changing a size, a shape, or a position of one or more portions of the e-label.

The e-label device of claim 1 , wherein the logic circuit is further configured to detect the appearance modification event trigger by detecting a particular appearance modification event trigger from among a plurality of appearance modification event triggers based on one or more values of the situational data and based on location determination data.
5 . The e-label device of claim 4 , wherein the logic circuit is further configured to determine a set of appearance parameters based on the appearance modification event trigger that was detected, and
wherein modifying the appearance of the e-label comprises modifying the appearance of the e-label based on the set of appearance parameters.
6 . The e-label device of claim 4 , wherein the logic circuit is further configured to determine a set of appearance parameters from among a plurality of sets of appearance parameters based on one or more values of the situational data and based on the location determination data, and
wherein the logic circuit is further configured to modify the appearance of the e-label by modifying the appearance of the e-label based on the set of appearance parameters.

The e-label device of claim 1 , wherein the logic circuit is further configured to determine that the product is in the presence of the one or more electronic external devices based on a signal strength threshold and a strength of a signal received from the one or more electronic external device.
8 . The e-label device of claim 1 , wherein the logic circuit comprises:
a microprocessor.
9 . A method for displaying an electronic label (e-label) for a product, the method comprising:
determining situational data of one or more electronic external device based on electronic signals received from the one or more electronic external device when the product is in the presence of the one or more electronic external device;
detecting, automatically and using an electronic logic circuit, an appearance modification event trigger based on the situational data, the appearance modification event trigger detected based on sensor data from sensors implemented by the e-label device, the sensor data including at least one of accelerometer data, gyroscope data, position data, or camera data;
determining, automatically and using the electronic logic circuit, an orientation of the product based on the gyroscope data and the accelerometer data; and
modifying, automatically and using the electronic logic circuit, based on the situational data and the orientation, an appearance of the e-label on a display screen in response to the appearance modification event trigger, the appearance modification event trigger defining at least one of conditions or criteria indicating when the product is within a threshold distance of the one or more electronic external device, the modified appearance of the e-label including an enlargement of a scanning portion of the product.
10 . The method of claim 9 , wherein the situational data comprise at least one of:
a location of the e-label device;
accelerometer data from the e-label device;
gyroscope data from the e-label device; or
beacon signals received by the e-label device, wherein the e-label device is configured to determine its location based on the beacon signals.
11 . The method of claim 9 , wherein modifying the appearance comprises:
changing a size, a shape, or a position of one or more portions of the e-label.
12 . The method of claim 9 , wherein detecting the appearance modification event trigger comprises:
detecting a particular appearance modification event trigger from among a plurality of appearance modification event triggers based on one or more values of the situational data and based on location determination data.
13 . The method of claim 12 , further comprising:
determining a set of appearance parameters based on the appearance modification event trigger that was detected,
wherein modifying the appearance of the e-label comprises modifying the appearance of the e-label based on the set of appearance parameters.
14 . The method of claim 12 , further comprising:
determining a set of appearance parameters from among a plurality of sets of appearance parameters based on one or more values of the situational data and based on the location determination data,
wherein modifying the appearance of the e-label comprises modifying the appearance of the e-label based on the set of appearance parameters.
15 . The method of claim 9 , wherein modifying the appearance of the e-label comprises:
modifying the appearance of one or more portions of the e-label.
16 . The method as in claim 9 wherein the presence comprises:
a signal strength threshold and a strength of a signal received from the one or more electronic external device.
17 . The method as in claim 9 , wherein the appearance of the e-label being displayed is modified by changing between a barcode and human readable text based on the situational data.
18 . A non-transitory computer-readable medium storing instructions for an e-label device to display an electronic label (e-label) for a product that, when executed by one or more processors of a computing system, cause the computing system to perform operations, the operations comprising:
determining situational data of one or more electronic external device when the product is in a presence of the one or more electronic external device;
detecting, automatically and using an electronic logic circuit, an appearance modification event trigger based on the situational data, the appearance modification event trigger detected based on sensor data from sensors implemented by the e-label device, the sensor data including at least one of accelerometer data, gyroscope data, position data, or camera data;
determining, automatically and using the electronic logic circuit, an orientation of the product based on the gyroscope data and the accelerometer data; and
modifying, automatically and using the electronic logic circuit, based on the situational data and the orientation, an appearance of the e-label on a display screen of the e-label device in response to the appearance modification event trigger, the appearance modification event trigger defining at least one of conditions or criteria indicating when the product is within a threshold distance of the one or more electronic external devices, the modified appearance of the e-label including an enlargement of a scanning portion of the product.
19 . The non-transitory computer-readable medium of claim 18 , wherein the situational data comprise at least one of:
a location of the computing device;
accelerometer data associated with the computing device;
gyroscope data associated with the computing device; or
beacon signals received by the computing device enabling self-determination of a location of the computing device.
20 . The non-transitory computer-readable medium of claim 18 , wherein the operations are configured to modify the appearance of the e-label by changing a size, a shape, or a position of one or more portions of the e-label.
