Abstract

Implementations set forth herein relate to conditionally delaying fulfillment of client update requests in order to preserve network bandwidth and other resources that may be consumed when an ecosystem of linked assistant devices are repeatedly pinging servers for updates. In some implementations, a server device can delay and/or bypass fulfillment of a client request based on one or more indications that certain requested data is currently, or is expected to be, expired. For example, a user that is modifying assistant settings via a cellular device can cause an update notification to be pushed to several other assistant devices before the user finishes editing the assistant settings. Implementations herein can limit fulfillment of update requests from the client devices according to certain criteria-such as whether the user is continuing to modify the assistant settings from their cellular device.

Claims (38)

1 . A method implemented by one or more processors, the method comprising:

determining, by a server device, that one or more updated assistant data files are available for use by at least one assistant device of an ecosystem of linked assistant devices,

identifying, by the server device, one or more shared characteristics of a plurality of updated assistant data files of the one or more updated assistant data files;

determining, based on one or more of the shared characteristics, a priority classification of the plurality of updated assistant files;

determining, by the server device and based on the priority classification, whether to compile a corpus comprising the plurality of updated assistant data files;

when the priority classification fails to satisfy a threshold, and by the server device:

compiling the corpus of the plurality of updated assistant files; and

transmitting the compiled corpus to the assistant device; and

when the priority classification satisfies the threshold, and by the server device:

transmitting one or more of the updated assistant data files to the assistant device individually.

2 . The method of claim 1 , wherein transmitting the updated assistant data files individually, or as the corpus, is responsive to a request from the assistant device.

3 . The method of claim 1 , wherein transmitting the updated assistant data files individually, or as the corpus, causes the assistant device to locally store the updated assistant data files.

4 . The method of claim 1 , wherein identifying one or more of the shared characteristics of the plurality of updated assistant data files of the one or more updated assistant data files comprises identifying a category of content associated with the plurality of updated assistant data files.

5 . The method of claim 4 , wherein determining to compile the corpus is based on determining the category is not associated with security of the assistant device.

6 . The method of claim 4 , wherein determining not to compile the corpus is based on determining the category is associated with security of the assistant device.

7 . The method of claim 1 , wherein the shared characteristics include data file type.

8 . The method of claim 1 , wherein the shared characteristics include data file size.

9 . The method of claim 1 , wherein the shared characteristics include data file relevance to an ongoing interaction between a user and the assistant device.

10 . The method of claim 1 , wherein the shared characteristics include data file relevance to the assistant device, of the ecosystem of linked assistant devices, in particular.

11 . A method implemented by one or more processors, the method comprising:

determining, by a client device, that one or more updated assistant data files are available for retrieval from a server device,

identifying, by the client device, one or more shared characteristics of a plurality of updated assistant data files of the one or more updated assistant data files;

determining, based on one or more of the shared characteristics, a priority classification of the plurality of updated assistant data files;

determining, by the client device and based on the priority classification, whether to request a corpus comprising the plurality of updated assistant data files; and

when the priority classification fails to satisfy a threshold:

transmitting, from the client device and to the server device, a request for the corpus; and

when the priority classification fails to satisfy the threshold:

transmitting, from the client device and to the server device, a request for one or more of the updated assistant data files individually.

12 . The method of claim 11 , further comprising:

prior to determining that the one or more updated assistant data files are available for retrieval from one or more server devices:

receiving, at the client device and from the server device, a notification indicating the one or more updated assistant data files are available,

wherein determining that the one or more updated assistant data files are available is based on the notification.

13 . The method of claim 11 , wherein identifying the one or more shared characteristics of the plurality of updated assistant data files of the one or more updated assistant data files comprises identifying a category of content associated with the plurality of updated assistant data files.

14 . The method of claim 13 , wherein determining to request the corpus is based on determining the category of content is not associated with security of the client device.

15 . The method of claim 13 , wherein determining not to request the corpus is based on determining the category of content is associated with security of the client device.

16 . The method of claim 11 , wherein the shared characteristics include data file type.

17 . The method of claim 11 , wherein the shared characteristics include data file size.

18 . A system comprising: one or more computers and one or more non-transitory storage devices storing instructions that are operable, when executed by the one or more computers, to cause the one or more computers to perform operations comprising: determining, by a server device, that one or more updated assistant data files are available for use by at least one assistant device of an ecosystem of linked assistant devices, identifying, by the server device, one or more shared characteristics of a plurality of updated assistant data files of the one or more updated assistant data files; determining, based on one or more of the shared characteristics, a priority classification of the plurality of updated assistant files; determining, by the server device and based on the priority classification, whether to compile a corpus comprising the plurality of updated assistant data files; when the priority classification fails to satisfy a threshold, and by the server device: compiling the corpus of the plurality of updated assistant files; and transmitting the compiled corpus to the assistant device; and when the priority classification satisfies the threshold, and by the server device: transmitting one or more of the updated assistant data files to the assistant device individually.
