Abstract

Systems and methods for, while a user is consuming a first media asset, generating for the user a recommendation of a second media asset based on a viewing history of the user. In some aspects, the systems and methods determine that a user is consuming only video of a first media asset, determine a first category for the first media asset, and retrieve a viewing history corresponding to the user. The viewing history comprises media assets consumed simultaneously with a media asset corresponding to the first category. The systems and methods select a second category corresponding to a highest number of media assets in the viewing history, select a second media asset based on the second category. Alternatively, the user can select the second media asset manually. The systems and methods generate for output the audio of the second media asset for simultaneous consumption with the video of the first media asset.

Claims (50)

1 . A method comprising:

detecting consumption of video of a sports asset;

accessing a viewing history;

based at least in part on detecting consumption of video of the sports asset and the viewing history, providing for display a user selectable recommendation for supplemental output of a news asset; and

based at least in part on selection of the recommendation, simultaneously providing for display video of the sports asset in a main portion of a display and video of the news asset in a secondary portion of the display, wherein:

the sports asset is muted during consumption of video of the sports asset, and

the viewing history indicates a preference of simultaneously consuming video of the muted sports asset and video of the news asset.

2 . The method of claim 1 , further comprising based at least in part on selection of the recommendation, providing for output of audio of the news asset.

3 . The method of claim 2 , wherein providing for output of audio of the news asset is for output from a device other than the display.

4 . The method of claim 2 , wherein providing for output of audio of the news asset is for output from the display.

5 . The method of claim 4 further comprising determining that the display supports audio output.

6 . The method of claim 1 , further comprising selecting the news asset from a content database.

7 . The method of claim 1 , wherein providing for display the user selectable recommendation comprises:

retrieving a data structure that indicates, for each of a plurality of categories, a number of occurrences of media assets consumed simultaneously with video of muted sports assets;

selecting a category corresponding to an entry of the data structure with a number greater than any other entry; and

selecting the news asset based at least in part on the selected category.

8 . The method of claim 1 , wherein providing for display the user selectable recommendation comprises:

determining a subset of candidate news assets, retrieving a rating for each candidate news asset from the subset, and selecting the news asset that has a rating greater than a rating of any other candidate news asset in the subset.

9 . The method of claim 1 , further comprising, based at least in part on user input after the simultaneous providing for display, swapping the main portion and the secondary portion such that video of the sports asset is in the main portion of the display and video of the news asset is in the secondary portion of the display.

10 . A system comprising:

control circuitry configured to:

detect consumption of video of a sports asset;

access a viewing history;

based at least in part on detecting consumption of video of the sports asset and the viewing history, provide for display a user selectable recommendation for supplemental output of a news asset; and

based at least in part on selection of the recommendation, simultaneously provide for display video of the sports asset in a main portion of a display and video of the news asset in a secondary portion of the display, wherein:

the sports asset is muted during consumption of video of the sports asset, and

the viewing history indicates a preference of simultaneously consuming video of <the muted sports asset and video of the news asset.

11 . The system of claim 10 , wherein the control circuitry is further configured to, based at least in part on selection of the recommendation, provide for output of audio of the news asset.

12 . The system of claim 11 , wherein the control circuitry configured to provide for output of audio of the news asset is provided for output from a device other than the display.

13 . The system of claim 11 , wherein the control circuitry configured to provide for output of audio of the news asset is provided for output from the display.

14 . The system of claim 13 , wherein the control circuitry is further configured to determine that the display supports audio output.

15 . The system of claim 10 , wherein the control circuitry is further configured to select the news asset from a content database.

16 . The system of claim 10 , wherein the control circuitry is further configured to:

retrieve a data structure that indicates, for each of a plurality of categories, a number of occurrences of media assets consumed simultaneously with video of muted sports assets;

select a category corresponding to an entry of the data structure with a number greater than any other entry; and

select the news asset based at least in part on the selected category.

17 . A method comprising:

detecting consumption of video of a news asset;

accessing a viewing history;

based at least in part on detecting consumption of video of the news asset and the viewing history, providing for display a user selectable recommendation for supplemental output of a sports asset; and

based at least in part on selection of the recommendation, simultaneously providing for display video of the news asset in a main portion of a display and video of the sports asset in a secondary portion of the display, wherein:

the news asset is muted during consumption of video of the news asset, and

the viewing history indicates a preference of simultaneously consuming video of the muted news asset and video of the sports asset.

18 . The method of claim 17 , wherein providing for display the user selectable recommendation comprises:

retrieving a data structure that indicates, for each of a plurality of categories, a number of occurrences of media assets consumed simultaneously with video of muted news assets;

selecting a category corresponding to an entry of the data structure with a number greater than any other entry; and

selecting the sports asset based at least in part on the selected category.

19 . The method of claim 17 , wherein providing for display the user selectable recommendation comprises:

determining a subset of candidate sports assets, retrieving a rating for each candidate sports asset from the subset, and selecting the sports asset that has a rating greater than a rating of any other candidate sports asset in the subset.

20 . The method of claim 17 , further comprising, based at least in part on user input after the simultaneous providing for display, swapping the main portion and the secondary portion such that video of the sports asset is in the main portion of the display and video of the news asset is in the secondary portion of the display.
