Abstract

Compression/reduction drivers are provided for performing surgical methods. Exemplary surgical methods that may be performed using the compression/reduction drivers described herein include, but are not limited to, arthrodesis procedures (i.e., bone fusion procedures), fracture fixation procedures, etc. The compression/reduction drivers are configured to simultaneously and independently apply a force against a bone segment and drive a fixation device into the bone segment.

Claims (32)

1 . A surgical method, comprising:

preparing a first pilot hole in a first bone segment;

preparing a second pilot hole in a second bone segment, wherein a gap extends between the first bone segment and the second bone segment;

advancing a fixation device into the first pilot hole with a compression/reduction driver, the compression/reduction driver including a compression sleeve and a spring that biases the compression sleeve toward the first bone segment,

wherein advancing the fixation device includes simultaneously applying a rotational driving force to the fixation device and applying a force against the first bone segment with the compression sleeve of the compression/reduction driver,

wherein applying the force reduces the gap to position the first bone segment in abutting contact with the second bone segment; and

advancing the fixation device into the second pilot hole while maintaining the force against the first bone segment.

2 . The surgical method as recited in claim 1 , wherein the first pilot hole and the second pilot hole are formed using a single drill bit.

3 . The surgical method as recited in claim 1 , wherein applying the rotational driving force includes rotating a handle and a drive shaft of the compression/reduction driver.

4 . The surgical method as recited in claim 3 , wherein applying the force includes applying a distal force to the handle of the compression/reduction driver in order to force a bone engaging surface of the compression sleeve of the compression/reduction driver into direct engagement with an exterior surface of the first bone segment.

5 . The surgical method as recited in claim 4 , wherein the handle, the drive shaft, and the compression sleeve rotate in unison as the rotational driving force is being applied.

6 . The surgical method as recited in claim 4 , wherein the bone engaging surface of the compression sleeve includes a plurality of bone engaging teeth at a serrated surface.

7 . The surgical method as recited in claim 1 , wherein the compression sleeve is movably secured relative to a spring retaining sleeve of the compression/reduction driver, and further wherein the spring extends between a first bearing surface of the spring retaining sleeve and a second bearing surface of the compression sleeve.

8 . The surgical method as recited in claim 7 , wherein the spring retaining sleeve includes a first slot through which the spring and a drive shaft of the compression/reduction driver are visible, and the compression sleeve includes a second slot through which the drive shaft and the fixation device are visible.

9 . The surgical method as recited in claim 1 , wherein the fixation device is a headless compression screw.

10 . The surgical method as recited in claim 1 , wherein the surgical method is a subtalar fusion procedure for fusing a calcaneus bone to a talus bone within a foot.

11 . A surgical method, comprising:

during insertion of a fixation device into a first bone segment and a second bone segment, simultaneously (a) applying a force against the first bone segment with a compression sleeve of a compression/reduction driver, the compression/reduction driver including a spring that biases the compression sleeve toward the first bone segment; and (b) driving the fixation device into the first bone segment and the second bone segment with a drive shaft of the compression/reduction driver.

12 . The surgical method as recited in claim 11 , wherein the fixation device is a headless compression screw.

13 . The surgical method as recited in claim 11 , wherein applying the force includes biasing a bone engaging surface of the compression sleeve against an exterior surface of the first bone segment.

14 . The surgical method as recited in claim 11 , wherein the force reduces a gap between the first bone segment and the second bone segment prior to the fixation device engaging the second bone segment during the insertion of the fixation device.

15 . The surgical method as recited in claim 11 , comprising, prior to applying the force or driving the fixation device:

preparing a first pilot hole in the first bone segment; and

preparing a second pilot hole in the second bone segment.

16 . The surgical method as recited in claim 11 , wherein the first bone segment and the second bone segment are bone fragments of a fractured bone.

17 . The surgical method as recited in claim 11 , wherein the first bone segment and the second bone segment are separate bones.

18 . The surgical method as recited in claim 11 , wherein the surgical method is an arthrodesis procedure.

19 . The surgical method as recited in claim 11 , wherein the surgical method is a fracture procedure.

20 . A surgical method, comprising:

engaging a fixation device with a compression/reduction driver, wherein the compression/reduction driver includes a handle, a compression sleeve, and a spring configured to bias the compression sleeve toward a bone segment;

inserting the fixation device into the bone segment by rotating the handle to apply a rotational driving force to the fixation device; and

during the inserting, applying a distal force to the handle to cause a bone engaging surface of the compression sleeve to engage the bone segment under a biasing force imparted by the spring.
