Abstract

A hemostatic device for promoting the clotting of blood includes a gauze substrate, a clay material disposed on the gauze substrate, and also a polyol such as glycerol or the like disposed on the gauze substrate to bind the clay material. When the device is used to treat a bleeding wound, at least a portion of the clay material comes into contact with blood emanating from the wound to cause the clotting. A bandage that can be applied to a bleeding wound to promote the clotting of blood includes a flexible substrate and a gauze substrate mounted thereon. The gauze substrate includes a clay material and a polyol. A hemostatic sponge also includes a gauze substrate and a dispersion of hemostatic material and a polyol on a first surface of the substrate.

Claims (32)

1 . A method of accelerating clotting, the method comprising:

providing a hemostatic device on or proximate to a bleeding wound, the hemostatic device comprising:

a gauze substrate;

a clay material disposed on said gauze substrate; and

a binder disposed on said gauze substrate to bind said clay material to said gauze substrate;

wherein the gauze substrate initially exists separately from the clay material; and

adhering a flexible substrate to a skin of a wearer to retain the hemostatic device on or proximate to the bleeding wound.

2 . The method of claim 1 , wherein the hemostatic device is configured such that when accelerating clotting, providing the hemostatic device is capable of causing at least a portion of the clay material to come into contact with a bleeding wound to assist in accelerating clotting.

3 . The method of claim 2 , wherein the flexible substrate is a non-breathable plastic material.

4 . The method of claim 1 , wherein the hemostatic device is mounted to the flexible substrate before adhering the flexible substrate to the skin of the wearer.

5 . The method of claim 1 , wherein the flexible substrate comprises a pressure-sensitive adhesive.

6 . The method of claim 1 , wherein the flexible substrate is disposed over substantially all of the hemostatic device.

7 . The method of claim 6 , wherein the flexible substrate comprises a pressure-sensitive adhesive disposed over substantially all of a skin-contacting surface of the flexible substrate.

8 . The method of claim 1 , wherein the clay material is kaolin.

9 . The method of claim 1 , wherein the hemostatic device further comprises a release agent.

10 . The method of claim 1 , wherein the binder is selected from the group consisting of glycerol, chitosan, polyvinyl alcohol, guar gum, gelatinized starches, polysaccharides, cellulose, and calcium alginate.

11 . A system to accelerate bleeding, the system comprising:

a hemostatic device, the hemostatic device comprising:

a gauze substrate;

a clay material disposed on said gauze substrate;

wherein the gauze substrate initially exists separately from the clay material; and

a binder disposed on said gauze substrate to bind said clay material to said gauze substrate; and

a flexible substrate configured to adhere the hemostatic device on or proximate to a bleeding wound.

12 . The system of claim 11 , wherein the flexible substrate is a plastic or cloth member.

13 . The system of claim 12 , wherein the plastic or cloth member is a non-breathable plastic material.

14 . The system of claim 11 , wherein the gauze substrate is flexible to allow the hemostatic device to form to a shape of the bleeding wound and to retain the shape of the bleeding wound.

15 . The system of claim 11 , wherein the flexible substrate comprises a pressure-sensitive adhesive.

16 . The system of claim 11 , wherein the flexible substrate is disposed over substantially all of the hemostatic device.

17 . The system of claim 11 , further comprising a sterilized packaging.

18 . The system of claim 11 , wherein the clay material is kaolin.

19 . The system of claim 11 , wherein the hemostatic device further comprises a release agent.

20 . The system of claim 11 , wherein the binder is selected from the group consisting of glycerol, chitosan, polyvinyl alcohol, guar gum, gelatinized starches, polysaccharides, cellulose, and calcium alginate.
