Abstract

One aspect of the present disclosure is a system including a waveform generator, a controller, and an electrical contact. The waveform generator is for generating an electrical nerve conduction block (ENCB). The controller is coupled with the waveform generator. The controller is configured to receive an input comprising at least one parameter to adjust the ENCB. The electrical contact is coupled with the waveform generator. The electrical contact is configured to be placed into contact with a nerve. The electrical contact comprises a high charge capacity material that prevents formation of damaging electro-chemical products at a charge delivered by the ENCB. The electrical contact is configured to deliver the ENCB to the nerve to block transmission of a signal related to a pain through the nerve.

Claims (34)

1 . A method comprising:

receiving, by a controller of a system, an input related to an electrical nerve conduction block (ENCB), wherein the system comprises the controller coupled to a waveform generator, the waveform generator, and at least two electrode contacts in electrical communication with the waveform generator and a nerve to deliver the ENCB to the nerve,

wherein the at least two electrode contacts comprise a high charge capacity material that at least partially prevents formation of damaging electrochemical reaction products at a charge delivered by the ENCB; and

adjusting, by the controller of the system, which one of the at least two electrode contacts delivers the ENCB to the nerve based on the input.

2 . The method of claim 1 , further comprising:

generating, by the waveform generator of the system, the ENCB having at least one parameter;

sending, by the waveform generator of the system, the ENCB to the one of the at least two electrode contacts from the waveform generator; and

applying, via the one of the at least two electrode contacts of the system, the ENCB to the nerve to block transmission of a signal through at least a portion of the nerve.

3 . The method of claim 2 , wherein the generating the ENCB by the system further comprises:

specifying, by the controller of the system, the at least one parameter of the ENCB

sending, by the controller of the system, the at least one parameter of the ENCB to the waveform generator.

4 . The method of claim 2 , wherein the at least one parameter comprises at least one of an intensity parameter, a time parameter, or a waveform parameter.

5 . The method of claim 1 , further comprising blocking, by the system, at least a portion of transmission of a signal in the nerve to reduce or eliminate a negative result of the transmission of the signal.

6 . The method of claim 5 , wherein the ENCB blocks at least the portion of the signal related to spasticity of a muscle but allows the remainder of the signal related to voluntary movement of the muscle.

7 . The method of claim 1 , further comprising: reducing, by the system, a symptom of a neurological disorder.

8 . The method of claim 7 , wherein the neurological disorder is at least one of stroke, brain injury, spinal cord injury, cerebral palsy, or multiple sclerosis.

9 . The method of claim 7 , wherein the neurological disorder is related to at least one of cancer, joint replacement, endometriosis, hyperhidrosis, vertigo, sialorrhea, torticollis, neuroma, or hiccups.

10 . The method of claim 1 , further comprising:

interpreting, by the controller of the system, the input; and

signaling, via the controller of the system, the waveform generator of the system with at least one of the selection of which one of the at least two electrode contacts to deliver the ENCB to the nerve.

11 . The method of claim 1 , wherein the ENCB comprises at least one of a monophasic direct current (DC) waveform, a charge balanced direct current (CBDC) waveform, a substantially CBDC waveform, or a high frequency alternating current (HFAC) waveform.

12 . A system comprising:

a waveform generator configured to generate an electrical nerve conduction block (ENCB);

a controller coupled to the waveform generator, wherein the controller is configured to receive an input comprising at least one parameter to adjust select which one of at least two electrode contacts delivers the ENCB to the nerve and send the at least one parameter to the waveform generator,

wherein the waveform generator selects the one of at least two electrode contacts to deliver the ENCB; and

the at least two electrode contacts coupled to the waveform generator and in electrical communication with a nerve, wherein the at least two electrode contacts comprises a high charge capacity material and are each configured to apply the ENCB to the nerve to at least partially block a signal transmitted to the nerve.

13 . The system of claim 12 , further comprising a user input device coupled to the controller and configured to receive a manual input from a user.

14 . The system of claim 12 , wherein the high charge capacity material is configured to at least partially prevent formation of damaging electrochemical reaction products at charges applied by the ENCB.

15 . The system of claim 12 , further comprising at least one sensor configured to sense a change in a physiological parameter and send the input based on the change in the physiological parameter.

16 . The system of claim 12 , wherein the geometric surface area of the at least one electrode contact is at least 1 mm 2 .

17 . The system of claim 12 , wherein the geometric surface area of the at least one electrode contact is from 3 mm 2 to 9 mm 2 .

18 . The system of claim 12 , wherein the ENCB comprises at least one of a monophasic direct current (DC) waveform, a charge balanced direct current (CBDC) waveform, a substantially CBDC waveform, or a high frequency alternating current (HFAC) waveform.
