A hand weight includes a chassis including a handle portion configured to be grasped by a user such that a forearm of the user extends along an axis, and a flexible element attached to the chassis. The hand weight can be configured to receive a movable mass, and the flexible element can be configured to at least partially support the movable mass such that the movable mass forms at least part of a sprung mass of a hand weight assembly including the hand weight and the movable mass, the sprung mass configured to move relative to the chassis of the hand weight and deform the flexible element in response to a force in a direction along the axis applied to the handle portion by the user while grasping the handle portion.
. A method of exercising, the method comprising:
placing a hand of a user within an opening that extends through of a body of a hand weight;
grasping and moving a handle of the hand weight that is positioned in the opening;
causing a mass within the hand weight to undergo a movement along the body; and
causing one or more peak forces experienced by the user as a result of moving the handle to be smoothed out while the user is moving the handle.
. The method of claim 1 , wherein the one or more peak forces comprise a peak translational force, and wherein the method further comprises reducing the peak translational force.
. The method of claim 1 , wherein the one or more peak forces comprise a force experienced on the hand of the user.
. The method of claim 1 , wherein the one or more peak forces comprise a force experienced on a wrist or a forearm of the user.
. The method of claim 1 , wherein the body is in contact with at least one of a wrist and a forearm of the user.
. The method of claim 1 , further comprising causing the mass to move around the body.
. The method of claim 1 , further comprising causing the mass to move about a central axis of the hand weight.
. The method of claim 1 , further comprising moving the hand weight in a punching motion.
. The method of claim 1 , further comprising applying a torque to the hand weight.
. The method of claim 1 , wherein the mass comprises a fluid, and wherein the method further comprises causing the mass to flow along the body.
. The method of claim 10 , further comprising partially restricting a flow of the mass along the body.
. The method of claim 10 , wherein the hand weight is configured to contain the mass.
. The method of claim 1 , further comprising placing the mass within a cavity of the hand weight.
. The method of claim 1 , wherein the body has a substantially elliptical shape.
. The method of claim 1 , further comprising causing the mass to move along a flexible element of the hand weight that is coupled to the body.
. The method of claim 15 , further comprising causing the flexible element to deform to accommodate the movement of the mass within the hand weight.
. The method of claim 15 , further comprising receiving the mass within a cavity defined at least in part by the flexible element.
. The method of claim 15 , wherein the flexible element is attached to the body.
. The method of claim 1 , wherein the mass is a first mass and the movement is a first movement, and wherein the method further comprises causing a second mass within the hand weight to undergo a second movement along the body.
. The method of claim 1 , further comprising extending the hand across the opening.
